I know the down is treated with Nikwax, etc. but is this bag a good contender for a two-month trip in the Himalayas with exposure to rain and wet?

I have not done anything that intense, although I would like to, so perhaps I’m speaking out of turn but if you keep the bag itself dry, by that I mean, keep it out of the rain in the puddles, I don’t think you should have a problem with the dampness of the air or anything. There is one time where water got through the floor of my tent, and there ended up being considerable moisture in between my sleeping pad and my sleeping bag, but it did not interfere with warmth or sleeping, the shell seem to keep me pretty dry, the biggest issue with that is figuring out how to pack it back into my backpack without getting everything else, wet or dripping water on the inside of the sleeping bag. I wouldn’t go off my review alone, but in my opinion, there would be worst choices than this sleeping bag for your trip. I’m excited for you! Just the thought of such an amazing trip get my blood pumping!

Can one find an external shell to protect this bag from rain or snow when no tent is available?

I have not personally heard of one, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything… I have a tent so I’ve not done extensive research. But of course, you could fix yourself up a light weight rain/moisture shield using a small tarp and paracord (& haps a few stakes) if you can’t find what you’re looking for with this sleeping bag and are going tentless. I don’t know if that helps, but I hope it does.

Can anyone please tell me what rating system is used to rate it a 0 degree and 14 degree bag?  I need this info to be able to compare different bags.

I don't own this bag, but normally it is the comfort rating you should look at, which usually shows how women can feel comfortable at that temp when and ut would be the lowest for a woman. So, without stats, I would add around 15°F for a woman to the sleeping bag of what the advertised temp says (so if you see O°F then a woman probably at 15°F, if a woman is rather on a cold side add more even as the lowst temp, also remember they test the sleeping bags on sleeping pads around R-5.4 on average, meaning - your sleeping pad plays a role too). If you get a high R-value sleeping pad and slepping bag with a good rating, then it may actually be closer that number. Also, if you have no ratings at all, just compare how much fill by weight of the down is there for each bag, the more fill the warmer it will be if the down is of same power, otherwise google up the weights of different type of down to see how to estimate it. I am not an expert. I am trying to decide on which sleeping bag to buy myself as I get cold easily & I am a woman.
