A great start to an epic Series
This was an interesting story. Fascinating world building built, vivid characters developing before your eyes and a World you want to see saved. There might even be a love story budding.

An epic adventure with shifting alliances, found family, and high fantasy action!
Why did everyone clench their teeth or clench their jaw or gnash their teeth or tense their jaw? Yes, the story is riddled with tension, but characters can express these emotions in different ways. Seriously, it felt like every other page, a character clenched their jaw. It took me out of the story to roll my eyes. Thus, the book loses a half-star.The prologue really isn't a prologue. It should have been marked as chapter one instead. I feel as if it was marked prologue because its a writing trend right now.Speaking of the first section, there was a lot of emotion packed in there. The battle cry between Andry and Sir Grendel "With me!" DANG, that was a gut punch! The "With me" battle cry was well-placed and impactful in the moment when re-used, carrying both emotion and hope.Aveyard is great at taking a moment within her setting to listen and observe it. It feels cinematic as the author uses all five senses to amp up the tension or conflict. A great example is page 312, last paragraph (hardcover edition). The characters are all well-layered. Their relationships develop in meaningful ways as the plot thickens. They also provided some fun lines, like "She's seen our faces and she won't stop rhyming. We need to kill her." Hehehe, dark humor.Overall, this is an epic read with shifting alliances, a budding found family, and high fantasy action. If the word choices for character reactions were better diversified, this would be a solid 5 stars. Otherwise, 4.5 stars.

Way Better than I Expected
So I really thought this would be a 4 star read and I have never read anything from this author before and I wasn’t sure what to expect. This story has a lord of the rings, game of thrones and the Witcher feel about it. I loved it. So right away we are thrown into the action with a battle scene. However afterwards there is a lot of character introductions and world building. There is action spread throughout but it did drag a little in the beginning and was a bit confusing while gathering a lot of information and getting to know the characters (we follow 6 characters viewpoints). So towards the middle I was thinking a 4 star for sure but it really picked up towards the end. The action scenes are written so well that they played vividly in my mind. Loved it and felt urgency towards the end of the book.Sorasa is my favorite character because she is an amazing fighter and assassin. Absolutely love how bad*** she is. Corayne is more the main character than any of the other characters we follow and at first I didn’t like her. She is 17 and easily the least trained in combat like no training so she has to rely heavily on others to keep her safe. However she’s is very intelligent and brings a lot to the table more towards the end. I can also appreciate her resolve. She didn’t choose to have to save the realm but she doesn’t walk away. She knows there’s no turning back and doesn’t whine or complain about it. She just keeps going even though she has to give up a lot. Definitely strong female characters.I could on and on. Definitely not a romantic book. There’s some romantic undertones and I’m totally getting enemies to lovers vibes from two of the characters. Not sure if that is how it will play out though. More action and fantasy. There’s monsters, pirates, zombie type things, scary bad guy, high stakes if they lose and a bunch of misfits coming together to try to save the realm.

The story itself is fine, the way it's written...not so much
Took me months to finally finish this book, mainly due to the way the book is written. While the writing itself is impeccable, there are entire paragraphs that often repeat the same thing verbatim and those paragraphs take up a lot of needless space that a simple sentence would have sufficed. This bogs down the pacing a lot, and at times I found myself skimming over these long-winded paragraphs to get back to the meat of the story. As for the story itself, it's a pretty standard quest high fantasy, like Lord of the Rings, but closer to 'Dragon Age.' Especially 'Dragon Age Inquisition' this book is essentially that video game in word form. Don't know if this was unintentional or not, but that is beside the point.I did enjoy the story for the most part, but the main heroine was a typical everyday woman and was pretty boring to follow. She's the 'I don't know if I can do this' or the 'why me?' coming to age protagonist. In all honesty, I feel like if Erida, the queen, was the main character then this book would have elevated to some high points. I say that because Erida is a pretty self-confident individual who has her moments of doubt but always pushes toward what she wants in the long run. It would have been interesting to follow her as the main character as opposed to the one we get.The other characters were all right in their respected roles. You've seen their kind in other fantasy works, so if you're a seasoned reader of this genre, they won't surprise you much.In the end, this book is a well-written, typical medieval high fantasy adventure novel. If you are a YA reader, this book may disappoint since most of the YA tropes are either subverted or hardly there at all. This book is more of a traditional fantasy novel than any modern YA fantasy novel.

Fast paced, Epic Fantasy with Multiple POVs
This book will take you by the hand and together you will jump into an adventure so grand and exciting that you won‘t want to put it down again. Interesting world building and character development, Aveyard typical reveals and such great tension and a sense of urgency. I loved all the characters but Sorasa Sarn has to be my favorite!Magic portals to different realms, pirates, assassins and a kingdom in the balance. This might just be my new favorite epic fantasy read - definitely among my Top 5 of 2021 and the year isn’t even over! <3

overrated
98% details, 2% plot if that. The beginning of the book is spent to paragraphs describing characters that end up dying 2 sec later.
