Rains
The book cover has 3 kids walking toward a water tower and two zombie like hands at the bottom of the book, as if it is following the kids. There are dark storm clouds and the title of the book RAINS, with water beads in the title. I was thinking a storm with rain that affected people. Nope, Rains is the last name of the two main characters, Patrick and Chance Rains. So that threw me off.So now that we understand this story has nothing to do with actual rain, let’s talk about what it does have. Meteors, plant stalks and spores. Human life that reaches the age of 18 turn to mappers or chasers. Zombie like creatures with holes through their heads where the eyes should be. Mappers map out the terrain for someone or something and chasers capture the children to send them off to a horrible fate.Patrick, Chance and some other children are barricaded in a school. Not all the children in the school see eye to eye. Patrick, Alex (Patrick’s girlfriend) and chance fight for the survival of all the children, but they can’t save them all.

Gripping!
This is NOT a book for many teens. It is extremely violent. There is no language or sexual situations but the violence is incredible. I am an adult who loves thrillers/end of the world fiction but the killing was almost too much for me. It is closer to the horror genre although it is not tagged as such.

Not just for teens
I read this book in one sitting. I think you might do the same thing. I didn't think I'd like The Rains; but I ended up loving it.

I found the style to get in the way of my enjoyment of the tale being told and often found myself ...
I have always appreciated Gregg Hurwitz's story telling, and the story line in this novel is fairly engaging and interesting as a horror. However, I did not appreciate that he chose to tell the story and a heavy handed first person point of view. I found the style to get in the way of my enjoyment of the tale being told and often found myself being distracted by the writing. Good story that could have been told much more effectively.

This author kept me turning pages long into the night and anxious to pick up the next day. He’s my new favorite author and I can’t wait to pick up his next novel! On to the next!Bravo Mr. Hurwitz! Bravo!

It actually was a novel for teen readers (didn't know that when I ordered) but it read well and no horrible language. I will be starting on Last Chance ...
I had read an excerpt from the Last Chance novel and found it interesting. Then I discovered there was a book prior to it so I wanted to read it first. It actually was a novel for teen readers (didn't know that when I ordered) but it read well and no horrible language. I will be starting on Last Chance in the next few days.

So what if it was written for teens!
Fast paced. Great character build. Teetering on hopeful, hopeless, and a love for dogs. Going to read the follow up immediately.

Creepy and Chilling
This is not just for teens reading. Gregg Hurwitz turns an Alien zombie invasion into a nightmare series story, told through the Rains family younger members, don’t be put off by this, children are an important part of the story. It is a great novel that takes you on a brutal and terrifying ride.
