The Great Escape (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] [2020] [Region A]

This is a much needed (and long awaited) full restoration of a Hollywood classic. TGE was scanned at 4K using an Arri scanner, and colour referenced to both a stable Technicolor and acetate prints. The original monoral audio track is also restored. In short, it won't get much better than this besides a 4K release.How it actually looks is in someway subjective, given we're so used to the clarity of modern photography. But the truth is, TGE was never a good looking movie. DeLuxe prints were renown for being the 'cheaper option'; they began to fade after as little as five years, had a distinctly muted colour palette and were not as crisp as other processes.In addition, the early anamorphic lenses used on this production, like those during other movies of the 1950's and 60's, were not at all forgiving. They are soft due to the amount of light required and often have terrible distortion.The reason I point all this out is because a movie like TGE is a product of its time, and the resulting transfer is not a case of a 'bad' restoration as many will try to argue, but simply a representation of the photography.The movie itself - despite its historical inaccuracies and the infamous ego-clash between McQueen and Garner - is a true classic if only for its pure entertainment value. There is barely a grown man alive that won't have gone to bed at night wondered how they would have made it after climbing out of the tunnel.

Doesn't play on my multi region blu ray player useless!

A huge list of actors made this movie about a German POW camp that was supposed to be inescapable . A lot of action .

One of Steve McQueen best .So good he won the Oscar for best actor

When movies entertained. Stellar cast, action scenes in real life before CGI and some nice humor.

The Great Escape is one of my favourite World War II films. An excellent cast and a great score.
