Health-conscious simple recipes for the neophyte cook, low in fat and calories, high on flavor.
Review – From Mama’s Table To Mine (2013 – 240 pages)After co-authoring four cookbooks, (published 2007, 2008 2009, 2011), the Deen brothers went their separate ways in the publishing world. Jamie authored a solo book, GOOD FOOD, the same year that his brother, Bobby, authored FROM MAMA’S TABLE TO MINE (2013).Since then Jamie has not given us another book. Bobby did in 2014, and that book, EVERY DAY EATS, remains his last book to date (2021).FROM MAMA’S TABLE TO MINE is a health-conscious, extremely simple, collection of every day recipes, quite easy, inexpensive, and practically “duh” level for the experienced home cook.It is divided into ten sections: 1. APPETIZERS – 11 recipes; 2. SOUPS – 10 recipes; SALADS – 10 recipes; FAMILY DINNERS – 20 recipes; CASSEROLES & ONE POT MEALS – 15 recipes; SANDWICHES: 10 recipes; SIDES – 19 recipes; BREAKFAST – 11 recipes; DESSERTS – 14 recipes; MENUS & COOKING TIPS.Favorites of ours are: Sweet Savory Meatballs; Pickled Shrimp; Seafood Dip; Broccoli Cheese Soup (a real winner); Turkey Meat Loaf; Barbecue Style Pork Chops; Memphis Dry Rub; Veggie Lasagna; French Toast Casserole; and Pina Colada Granita.A number of these recipes are re-thought from his mother Paula’s recipe books, but with the responsible take of eliminating or reducing excess fats, oils and sugars. You’ll find here light mayonnaise and light sour cream, 2% fat milk, Greek yogurt, a reduction in the use of and amounts of sugar (especially trading out brown sugar for white cane sugar), and an all-round approach of boosting flavor from natural ingredients, instead of from processed sugars, fats and artificial flavor enhancers. As such, he paved the way for Paula’s PAULA DEEN CUTS THE FAT, a few years later, where she grabbed the bull by the horns and wrote her own cookbook, following in Bobby’s footsteps, re-imagining her favorite recipes in a healthier format. This followed from her shocking Diabetes 2 diagnosis and her wake-up call to change her diet, lose weight, and eat healthier.Kudos to both Bobby and Paula for their new approaches to healthier eating. FROM MAMA’S TABLE TO MINE is an excellent beginner’s cook book for young people and geared towards the modern food concepts of small bites, using fresh ingredients.

Delicious and healthy
Wow! As another customer put it, "I was pleasantly surprised." After seeing Bobby Deen demonstrated some recipes on the Dr. Oz show, I borrowed this book from the library, less than a week later, I ordered my own copy. First of all, the book is pleasing to the eye. Many color photographs and very well organized. The chapters are divided into sections such as Appetizers, Salads, Sides, and Comfort Foods, to name a few. Each section is tabbed with a color, sort of like a telephone book (just color coded, nothing extends from the pages). While many of the recipes have a Southern flair, don't get caught up in this. I'm from NY and LOVE the recipes. So far, I've made:Black Bean Soup with Avocado -- brought this to my mom and we dined in style. It has a sort of southwest taste to it.Grilled Salmon with Honey Mustard -- not too original, but yummy nonethelessShepherd's Pie -- AMAZING!!! I've never used ground turkey before. This recipe was a total hit with my hubby and son (I'm a vegetarian, but even making this, my mouth was watering) I will post a pic of this dish.Loaded Lasagna -- You will never guess that there's cottage cheese in this. Scrumptious, flavorful, filling and has great texture (I make my own sauce, but followed the directions to a T).Yes You Can Mac and Cheese -- I have to be honest. This was my only disappointment. The dish didn't taste "cheddar-y" enough. I used reduced fat shredded sharp cheddar as indicated. The sauce wasn't very saucy, sort of clumpy, not smooth. Oh well. One bummer isn't too bad.Twice Baked Cheddar Potatoes -- not too original, but definitely reduced cal. Very tasty, you will believe you are eating a full-fat version.Baked Sweet Potato Fries -- Five ingredients. Very easy and flavorful, something you can make with the kids.Tonight I'm planning to make Zesty Chicken Fajitas for my sons.My boys have agreed that "he (Bobby Deen) makes good recipes)."This book has become one of my go-to cookbooks.

Great Looking Recipes !! :)
I really like the way Bobby has taken standard, comfort food type recipes and lowered the fat and sugar. It is well written in a casual, easy to understand manner, he lists the basics of Fat, Carbs etc. of each recipe. The recipes cover enough food items to begin a diet with. Breakfast items as well as desserts and comfort type entrees. I was a bit surprised that the book contained soooo many pictures of him. He is a handsome guy....but hey....there are too many to count, just him, smiling, paddling a board, standing at the grill, smiling, standing in a yard, well.....you get the picture :) If you buy this book, you will lots of them !! :) I do highly recommend this as a diet book, one that I might actually follow because they are recipes of foods I like. Thanks Bobby......!! But haven't tried one yet, so will update later.

Great recipes and easy to make
Everything in the book I've tried so far is delicious. Not your typical diet food. My favourite was the oven baked fried chicken - the best!!

Pretty good diet book
Got this as we love the classic American cooking and wanted it without all the calories. Recipes have turned out well so far (made about 6),all very easy and tasty. Beware the USA measurements but these are easy to convert. Star knocked off as portion sizes are very small but even a larger serving fits into my diet plan so just remember this.
