A Heart Warming Adventure
Mira Rothenberg's first book, Children with Emerald Eyes (1977), was unusual in that it did not overanalyze the pathology of autistic and schizophrenic children. At a time when much of the literature was struggling with the nature or nurture debate, and to label such children in neat little psychiatric terms and throw away the key, here was a refreshingly candid and often painful account of dealing with their human condition. It was a remarkable journey of confronting their fears, deprivation, and abandonment issues, and drawing them out of the darkness one child at a time. The author's new book, The Children of Raquette Lake, goes back in time to the genesis of her pioneering work with autistic and schizophrenic children. It is about the trials and tribulations of taking eleven such children to a retreat, and their transformation. Intertwined in the narrative is a fascinating glimpse into the private life and struggles of the author, and her characteristic candor makes compelling reading. While her first book is about what she did, in this book you'll understand why.The author's single minded devotion to these children is particularly inspiring. She wanted the best for them and went out to get it, notwithstanding the skepticism of her colleagues and the bureaucratic minefield awaiting her. What she was able to achieve defies logic. Her adventure exemplifies the Ray Bradbury quote: "taking a leap and growing your wings on the way down". When you are passionate about something, serendipity follows you.

A Rare and Wonderful Story
Mira Rothenberg is a pioneer in the treatment of autism and schizophrenia in children and The Children of Raquette Lake tells the extraordinary story of how she began what would be the renowned Blueberry Treatment Center, camp, and school. The book is a rare view into the mind of a creative genius who knew the rules and knew when to break them. Brava to Mira Rothenberg and thanks from the lucky readers who can share her adventure.

A Fascinating Read
Marvelously written. Mira,Zev and Tev were warm, honest, loving and heroic champions for these severally disturbed kids. I was a teacher at Blueberry Day Treatment Center for one year in the 1970's and I have first hand knowledge of how troubled these children were and the energy and experience it took to work with them and make even the smallest difference in their behaviors. To devote your life to this work is incredible. Congratulations Mira for writing a story that reads like fabulous fiction and is indeed extraordinary fact.Judy Clemente, Ed.D
