Learn to Play Bluegrass Dobro Guitar
W**.
A good beginners book
This book will help you if you don't have a "live" teacher. It covers the basics of playing the instrument by using familiar bluegrass and folk tunes. The tunes are shown in notation and tablature. Audio examples are available on a web site that is indicated on the title page.

It is not a method
This is not a method to learn to play the Dobro. It is actually a just a song book with a VERY BRIEF explanation at the beginning. There are only a couple of pages of instruction. If you are not acquainted with Dobro technique (I'm not) this book will be of very little help to you. If you already know how to play, it's a collection of songs that are fun to play. What I'm doing is making midi transcriptions on GuitarPro5 and slowing things down and learning the pieces little by little. It takes forever. The book won't teach you back up, the way you would play in a band situation with a singer. It's for solo playing. If you want a book on technique I recommend The Dobro Workbook by David Hamburger. It is exactly the opposite of the Mel Bay book. It focuses on technique but has no songs. So, if you can buy both books and somehow fuse them together, it would just be perfect.I'm giving the book three stars because the contents are of some value, but if you are looking to learn to play the Dobro in a way that you can jam with other players, this isn't it.

Poorly conceived and executed
I have been a guitar player for over 30 years and a music teacher for just about 13. I bought this book after getting a dobro and deciding to spend the summer learning how to play. Although the book has some good beginning pieces in it and does a decent job of getting one started, it is dated and frankly, contains many errors. Much of the tab is wrong and does not match up with the recording or the standard notation. Speaking of the recording, it is awful. The vocal instruction is drenched in reverb for some reason, but worse than that, the playing is awkward, clumsy sounding, and often out of tune -- not a good example of fine playing at all! As an experienced player, I can work around these faults and still gain something from the book, but for beginners this could be more than a waste of time, it could put you off dobro for life. See if you can get a more modern instructional book instead.
