Quality of the recipes
I found the recipe from this book a decade ago for Brunswick stew. I did not have the book so when I ordered and just received the hardcopy, I was estatic. I have made this recipe for years .also, sometimes I change ingredients with what I have on hand but it still comes out delicious. Rave reviews from those whom consume it. Southern Living test and test their recipes before they print in a book. I am beyond pleased.

Beautifully Done
I ordered this cookbook for myself and one for my Mom for Christmas. I sat yesterday and looked at it cover to cover and what a wonderful book - I came back on to Amazon to order another, one for my niece for Christmas. It's a compilation of old favorites and they are some great old favorites! The pages are done to look like an "heirloom" cookbook. They look like you inherited this book only in perfect condition! There are pictures of some of the old Southern Living covers, there are stories from different contributors of the book, there are old family snapshots from holidays, you name it this book has it if you are looking for the wonderful nostalgia of times being about family and food. In my mind, it brought me right back to my Granny's house on a Sunday. I had gotten fresh peas in the morning from the farmers' market so I made the spoon bread recipe to go with them, a little BBQ pork roast and fresh farm tomatoes. It just doesn't get any better in a cookbook if it can inspire you to get right up and make one of the recipes!!!

Southern Living Hits a Home Run with this Book
I have many Southern Living Cookbooks, and hesitated before purchasing this one. I am so happy that I took the chance. This is not the book of "whatever is trendy". It is full of real recipes we took for granted growing up, cooked for our own children, and then forgot as work, empty nests, and just too busy to deal with big meals thinking took over our lives. I plan to give one of these to each of my children so another generation can enjoy these wonderful, flavor filled foods without feeling they must shop at specialty stores and then cook under pressure. The directions are precise and easy to follow, the ingredients readily available, and the outcome wonderful. The family stories and memories had me remembering my own time growing up in the kitchen with the people I loved and admired.

So many older recipes to try
I took my time looking through this cook book and I found so many recipes from years ago that brought back sweet memories. I can't wait to start making each recipe that will be a taste of my past.

Great cookbook with formatting issues.
This is a wonderful cookbook with many old fashioned and hearty recipes. There are plenty of recipes using traditional methods, as well as some adapted for today's fast paced, "I need it on the table quick" lifestyle. It's a treasure. However, I have the Kindle edition, and the formatting is wonky. The background images are smaller than the page size, and often obscure the text, because they don't line up as they were meant to. Even worse, if you are using the Kindle app on Windows 8.1, the text is way too small to read and can't be adjusted. Try to use it on a regular Windows platform with Kindle for PC, and again, it's illegible. Therefore, I find it not quite as useful as it could be. I gave it only four stars because of the formatting issues. Otherwise it deserves a five.

Excellent Selection of Recipes
Great simple recipes. My qualifications for a cookbook are simple - straight forward and seasonal recipes with easy to find ingredients and photos of every recipe. This book qualifies on both counts. Finally a recipe for spiced nuts without butter! The technique with egg white creates a crispy shell to adhere your spices to the nuts. Not greasy. The best I have ever made. All recipes are approachable like most southern cooking - with adaptations for health. Some recipes are rather pedestrian (deviled eggs, potato salad) while most are quite good. I generally enjoy this series from Southern Living - if you enjoy the magazine then you will appreciate this cookbook. An interesting read - the vintage photos add to the visual interest and the text is wonderful.

Good old fashion standards...
I like this book better than the annual Southern Living Cookbooks.

All the comforts of home
Once again Southern Living has a winner of a cookbook. The recipes are authentic, tried and true favorites that bring back all the memories of home. I enjoyed the stories and the photos of 1960's Southern Living covers. I would have loved to have seen stories about the local fairs, ice cream socials, pot lucks and reunions that make up a huge part of our Southern culture and our food heritage.

Wonderful Food
Tried and true southern recipes. Everything we've made has been wonderful. I find most of the recipes just need a tad more salt though.
