Pop culture vulture must read!
Magnificent autobiography by Stephen Morris written in a very self-deprecating tongue-in-cheek manner and by turns contemplative, alienated but full of self-confidence and a first-hand account of the birth of punk rock and the post-punk/new wave movement that spawned and formation of postpunk/new wave band Warsaw that became Joy Division and then New Order and all the legendary and iconic personalities and historic places that was/were the ground zero of a cultural movement that is now ingrained in pop DNA! The book chapters are like episodes in a film series full of amazing and historic accounts of a most historic pop culture phenomenon that still reverberates now and forever! 5 stars indeed!

Did not disappoint
I had been waiting for Morris to write a book and look forward to Vol 2. Following closely now for nearly 35 years reading everything I could about the band, I knew little about Morris’s true background and real contributions. The few old stories about recording with Hannett are here, but there’s far more revealed. Morris calls Sumner the most musical of the original four (or something to that effect), but Morris is certainly humble and comes across very well. Intelligent writing that is often funny and always interesting. Morris is a real music fan and more experimental in his approach than I had initially thought. A true memoir of his life through May 1980. Very recommended for anyone interested in Joy Division or New Order.

If you love Joy Division, a must read
Best of the three books (hooky's, barney's, steve's). The childhood part is a bit tedious, but once you get to Steve's teens it gets nothing but amazing. Lots of anecdotes never heard of before and you get to know Steve: a music, sci fi and tech rebellious geek (like many JD fans like me, I guess). All in all, the story of the human drum machine behind Joy Division and, later, New Order. If I could chat with any of JD's members, it would be him for sure.

Great Read!
Until I read this book, I had no idea that Stephen Morris had so much of a sense of humor. I absolutely loved reading this (as well as his Fast Forward Vol. 2 one). Great insight directly into Joy Division.A must read for Joy Division/New Order fans!

Must read for the Joy Division/New Order fan
Stephen’s recounting of his life before and during Joy Division is an extremely entertaining read. It ends as New Order is beginning its forty year (and still going strong) career. Looking forward to Volume Two!

Great read, entertaining peek into musician’s life
Brilliantly entertaining story from New Order’s “human drum machine.” Reads as if you were right there with Stephen every step of the way. An entertaining look at Stephen and his band mates.

Boring……..sorry, Steven
First of all, I just want to say that I really like Steven Morris and he seems like a really nice guy. But….. the first half of this book is about his boring childhood. OMG~ one chapter would have been great to hear about his childhood and teenage years. Not half a novel! When he finally gets to the tryout for Joy Division, I was so happy. It’s like going to a strip club and waiting until the last minute of the song for the dancer to take her top off. Finally!!!I wish Steven would have gone into more details about the writing process or the gigs. Life on the road and some highlights would have been nice too. It’s definitely the opposite of Hooky’s book. If you like sex, drugs and rock & roll, Hooky’s book is for you. Hooky also bashes Barney and pretty much claims most of NO/JD success for himself. Steven is definitely more humble and doesn’t bash anybody. If you’re looking for any dirt, this is NOT the book for you.

Can I give this ten stars?
Always been a fan of JD and NO but this book is something special. Boy, can Morris write! I flew through his recollections of growing up. All very funny and totally relatable. I must admit, if his music career wouldn't have taken off, Morris could have ended up sleeping on the streets he shot himself in the foot so often with his erratic behaviour. His poor parents! Thankfully wasn't the case as he's a remarkable and unique drummer.Stylewise this reminds me of a Confederacy Of Dunces it's that witty and clever. Brilliant. (I've got the second volume arriving tomorrow)!

one of the other two !
