A joy, even in 2013!
I've enjoyed a number of Alexandra Stoddard's books, but this one is BY FAR my favorite. Exactly as per the title, this book guides one through the process of consciously "defining who you are and how you want to live". The advice to give consideration to how one truly lives & uses the space in one's home, and to then plan one's decor for comfort and practicality really resonated with me. Like the author, I find enormous pleasure in my home for the simple pleasures and restoration it provides. Our home is rented, the contents are simple but selected with love and care. After reading the first couple of chapters, I literally jumped out of bed and rearranged my kitchen drawers, transferring selected items to my dining room server - resulting in immediate practical benefits as well as the opportunity to now utilize some treasured but previously hidden tableware. I'm now motivated to continue a journey with Alexandra through my home, identifying that areas that do not work but that with some minor adjustment could contribute to me truly being "at home" in my home. I heartily recommend this read.

Increasing the love for how I live
I have been inspired and encouraged by Alexandra Stoddard's inquisitive writings for many years. She offers readers the invitation to take time to reflect on oneself in relationship to one's surroundings, and to self-curate a completely individualized outcome. Both the reading and my responsive actions are enhancing my pleasure of living in my home. As with every book, this may not be for everyone. It does require emotional reflection and engagement in the process of "home building" and, in that way, may offer too little direction, too few pieces of actual advice, tips, and how-to's. But for me it is an excursion into increasing my awareness of how to increase my delight in where I live.

Drawing close to home
Alexandra Stoddard is what I call a philosopher of realism. Home is her milieu, and she teaches her readers how to let home teach us to become the individuals we strive to be.

Thoughtful
I really enjoy the way that the author writes & how she encourages you to be thoughtful about your surroundings. It's a book that you pick up periodically ( not read through like a novel.) I enjoyed it enough, that after reading it years ago, I replaced it on Amazon after the original book got water damage.
