Field Peas are a yummy Southern staple, but difficult to find at the local grocer.I was excited when I found them on Amazon.I enjoyed them already and look forward to having them again.

A Classic Creole Staple
I followed the instructions on the bag, but halved the amounts because I live alone. I added a half onion, a handful of Okra, and a few ounces of pork belly. To start, trimmed the skin from the pork belly and cut multiple slices half way thru and browned it. I added half of an onion sliced in large chunks and broke them up, added 2 teaspoons of crushed garlic and once the garlic was fragrant added half the bag of the cleaned and rinsed beans, 5 cups of water, 1 tablespoon of chicken bullion powder, stirred thru. Added Salt and Black Pepper a few minutes prior to pulling off the heat. Makes a solid pot liquor.

These field peas/crowder peas I have been wondering how to get for decades!
I followed the directions on the package and made the crowder/field peas with bacon the first time and ham hocks the second time. I love the earthy flavor of these peas. Used to live in Memphis, Tennessee. As a Northern Michigan native I was not familiar with all the different types of beans/peas common in the South. My husband is a Tennessee native and after we moved away from Tennessee I have been unable to find these dried beans out West in California nor up North in Michigan. I was very happy with my new peas and so is my husband! I will order them again and also told my sister in law who lives in Northern Michigan but who is a Memphian born and raised, about how I found these peas. She is excited to learn how to acquire some for herself! I also liked that the dried peas had very little sand in them when I washed them to begin preparing.

Satisfied the craving but expensive.
Couldn't find field peas anymore locally. I really had a craving for "Hoppin' Johns", a Southern dish, so I bought these peas. They were very good but $15 for two 1 pound packs of peas is too much. When I could find them locally, they were $1.99/pound. The good news is they'll last a long time as I only cook this dish a couple of times a year.

Excellent
They made a fantastic Hoppin' John using smoked turkey necks instead of the normal ham hocks, plus heirloom Carolina Gold rice from Palmetto Farms. I found the cooking time less than what the package recommended but that could be a result of my hard water.
