Toyota OEM definitely well made. The packaging though wasn't quite up to par, with both tailgate bar clips broken. Fortunately, I had spare clips. Install was easy & works great.

Product arrived packaged satisfactory and in good condition. This was the exact Toyota replacement needed for installation. Watched YouTube for tools required and proper installation procedures. Happy with quality of product.

Was going to buy one of the cheaper ones offered on Amazon but opted for this one after reading some of the bad reviews. Since my tailgate gets lots of use and has had handle issues in the oast I wanted peace of mind with OEM. It was duper easy to install, even the lock. Took me about 30 minutes because I had to clean quite a bit of dirt from inside tailgate panel after it was removed. I'm not the most hands on mechanicaly inclined person but feel I could have done this swap out in about 20 minutes if I wanted. Shouldn't take more than 30 though.

Although the price is about 4 times that of the knock offs (assuming this is truly a "genuine" Toyota part), it works as advertised. It took 11 years for the first one to break, so assuming I keep the truck another 11 and it doesn't break until then, I'll say I got my monies worth. If I crash the truck or it dies within 2 - 4 years, then I should have bought the knock off at $20 instead of $80 and I would be in the same position. One should probably try to anticipate remaining ownership length of the truck when deciding to purchase the "genuine" part at 4 times the price of the knock off.So if you drive like and idiot and are susceptible to crashes, or your truck is already 10-15 years old, you may opt for the knock off. It may break sooner than this one, but you can buy 4 of them that last just as long overall at the same price. Alternatively, if this is TRULY a genuine Toyota part, and I can get another 11 years out it, this tailgate handle will still be going strong when she rolls 300,000 miles.

You will need a T30 torx driver and a 10mm socket with standard extension to complete the job. T30 for the screws that hold the cover plate on the tailgate, and the 10mm to remove and install the latch assembly. Save the screws! The new one does not have screws included.You will also need some patience to remove the original spring clip that holds the lock in place. The new unit comes with a new one installed, so you have to do this twice, once to get your original key lock off of the old unit and to remove the new one that comes installed. (I did this by myself, but a pair of extra hands would make this job easier). Three small flat head screw drivers were able to un-do the springs.This is original 2002 Toyota equipment. Very strong and should last another 15 years. It took me about 20 minutes, once I found the correct tools.

This Toyota OEM part was much more sturdily made and fit better than the after market products. It was 3x more expensive but worth the premium price if you plan on keeping the vehicle.
