Cheap, Works, but the Apple FW Design Fails
Why Apple changed the design for the Firewire 800 connector, I have no idea, though one might naturally suspect they wanted people to have to buy special and expensive new cables.Pros: Yes, it works and it's not expensive"Cons": It easily falls out, resulting in the "Device Removal" warning about possible loss of data. Note, though: this isn't the fault of the adaptor. The problem lies with Apple's new design for the FW connection. Cables with the FW 800 connection easily disconnect from the computer. This might not be a big concern if the connection is to a desktop machine, but it's really a bother with a laptop on one's lap. A pity, the old design, for the FW 400 works really well. Let's hope, without holding our collective breaths, that Apple either goes back to a design similar to that used for FW 400 or comes up with something as secure.Updated 11/06/09

Okay for occasional use
The adapter works fine. I leave it plugged in because too much movement can cause the connection to be lost. I would not recommend its use for people who rely on a firewire connection, but it works well if you only occasionally need to use the firewire port. It's not a bad product for the price.

Firewire 400-800 Adapter
What's to say? It works. Zero electronics here. I haven't whacked the thing with a hammer, but it it's solid and functional. I have only used it in one application--to connect a FireWire 400 hard drive to a new Mac Mini, which has a FireWire 800 port (plus its five USB ports)--and the connection functions flawlessly. It's no less expensive that a FW 400-800 cable, but if you already own FW 400 cables of varied lengths, the adapter is a flexible way to go.

Problems with Mac Pro
On the front of the Mac Pro (early 2008 model) is a Firewire 400 port and a Firewire 800 port. When I use this adapter on the end of a Firewire 400 cable and plug it into the front Firewire 800 port, it works fine. But if I leave it in the port and reboot (using System 10.5.8), the Mac freezes on either a gray or blue screen (color depends on how far along the boot process appears to go). If I remove the cable, sometimes it will continue start up after a few minutes, sometimes it requires another reboot. Tried it several times and the behavior is the same as described above. But the adapter does work with both firewire video sources and hard drives.I haven't had time to experiment with it on the rear ports or via a hub.YMMV...

Freezes Mac Pro under 10.6 on startup
I purchased this adapter to connect an Apple iSight camera to my new Mac Pro, but it was all but useless. Every time I'd boot with the adapter connected, the Mac Pro would freeze at the gray screen (no gray Apple logo, no spinning pinwheel). As soon as I disconnected the adapter, the Mac Pro would continue to boot. I could then plug in the adapter, and the computer & camera would work properly. I tried connecting a FW400 HD using the adapter and, at startup, the computer experienced the same freeze. Perhaps I received a defective, but, for a $10 part, I won't spend 2 hours trying to get it replaced.I purchased a SIIG 9 to 6 pin FireWire adapter, and it works flawlessly. MicroCenter carries it.If you have a Mac, be leery of this adapter.

Works as expected
Just a quick review. This piece of hardware allows you to use a standard Firewire400 cable and plug it into the newer Firewire800 port found on the recently introduced Macbooks. I do not have a Mac Desktop, but these may have the new interface as well. Anyway, the adapter works just as you would expect it to. If you do have one of the new macbook pros, you know that all of the hardware ports are along the left side of the laptop, which can feel a little crowded - I use all of the ports at the same time: monitor, FW800 Ethernet, Power Adapter, etc. The Firewire adapter does fit without any problems. Why 4 stars? It's not exactly up to swiss standards for craftsmanship... I think if you really man-handled it, it would probably break, but so-far-so-good for me, and the price was right!

Firewire 800 adapter saves the day!
When my daughter's old macbook's hard disk was dying she bought a new computer because of some serious time constraints on a project she was working on. We soon realized she was in trouble, though, when she wasn't able to plug the old machine into the new one because the new one had only firewire 800, not 400 and she was without a cable. I ordered this adapter and had it delivered to her overnight (thanks to my Amazon Plus!) and she was back up and running the very next day. She had her files back in time to meet her deadline. The adapter worked perfectly and seamlessly to allow her to use target disk mode on the dying laptop (which was the ONLY way she could get the old machine to boot.) This adapter saved the day... and quite possibly my daughter's college career!

Works, but not secure in the FW800 port
The good news is that the adapter does indeed work. The bad news is that the adapter is not secure in the FW800 port of my MacBook Pro. The first time I used it to hook up my external FW lightscribe disk burner to burn the label on a disk, the adapter fell out of the socket in the middle of the burn. Thus, I was left with a half burned label on my disk. Very frustrating.
