Mary Berry was brought up in Bath where her father ...
Mary Berry was brought up in Bath where her father was mayor. She is very frank about the fact that she was not a studious child and didn't do well in school. Her parents were worried about her and quite relieved when, as a teenager, she excelled in Home Economics classes. She went on to study what we now call hospitality management. Her autobiography continues from those early years of her career through today. She has developed recipes for magazines, appeared on cooking shows on television and radio, taught cooking classes and published over 70 books on cooking and baking. She also tells about her courtship with Paul, her husband of fifty years, and their children. It is her spirit that makes Berry so engaging. Although she has certainly known difficult times, she had polio as a child and one of her children died in an accident at 19, she kept moving forward. She is currently 81 and still open to new experiences. A very refreshing and inspiring person!

A Motivational Memoir
This kindlebook of Recipe For Life; The Autobiography by Mary Berry contains information on both the early life, personal life details, and some details on the career life of Mary Berry. Her story is inspiring to me because she is a real life example on how it is possible for someone to carve out a career path for themselves that can transcend age and last for life. This is because even if I won the lottery I’m both logically and intuitively aware that it is part of my purpose/destiny to work/be employed for the rest of my current lifetime and seeing real-life examples are both illuminative and encouraging to my soul/spirit. Some of the details in this kindlebook of Recipe For Life The Autobiography of Mary Berry; during her early formative years she spent much time outside, Mary Berry’s memories of a nanny who was far from the type of nanny similar to Mary Poppins in what sounds to be an aggressive way, some details on Mary Berry’s father service as a Chairman of Planning and later Mayor/being instrumental in establishing the University of Claverton Down, she explained how her paternal grandmother passed away by the time her father was two years old, details on how her parents met apparently at a mutual friends 21st birthday party, a recipe for ginger and treacle spiced traybake cake, a recipe for Mary Berry’s mother’s bread and butter pudding, a recipe for something called Canterbury tart, some of the work experience she arranged for herself such as working at a bakery, a butcher, and in the catering department at London Airport, one of her first holidays abroad was with her friends Sally R, Jane Harvey, Pip Aubrey, and much more.

A grandma anyone would want
She is now called the UK's favorite grandmother. I have watched her on baking shows (The Great British Bake Off) and she is such a lady. She also shows that you can succeed without a university degree if you have talent, goals and direction -along with hard work. She didn't like school or do particularly well. She preferred sports. Now reading her book which comes with a recipe at the end of each chapter. I finished reading about her family- she had good parents with talents of their own. Her father had been a major of Bath. Both enjoyed entertaining. It shows the influence of one's home and family. The book goes through her life showing the choices she made in her career and her choices and friendships in her personal life. She is a very sociable person and has lots of friends. Not finished the book yet, but will continue to read about this very nice woman who is uniique and a great role model.

I loved the story that Mary has written about her life
I loved the story that Mary has written about her life. She is the same on t.v. as she has lived-just a very nice ambitious kind lady. I would like to meet her in person. I hope she at least still does the master classes with Paul Hollywood. They are a perfect team. I have learned so much and started baking again. Also, I bought the Mary Berry Bakes book and have been trying out the recipes there too!Louise Kelley

what a wonderful story about a lovely woman who has worked hard, moved up the ranks and hasn't seemed to piss anyone off.,
After watching Mary and Paul on the British Bake off I realized that competitive cooking and baking can be done with such class and charm. They are both so warm and supportive, Paul being less motherly of course, toward the contestants. I happened to see Mary's story on Amazon and found it a delightful read. How wonderful it would be to have Mary for tea!

A very readable autobiography!
I loved Mary's telling of her life story. Her honesty had me laughing and crying in parts of it. One thing that it made me realize is just how much British society has changed since she was very young. This was a very enjoyable book to read.

Recipe for life
A beautifully written biography, modestly portraying the life of Mary Berry, the up's and downs of her life. You can do nothing but admire her for her coping method's of dealing with adversity, reminding me of Rudyard's poem ' If'. I would like to say ,a poem I use as a basis for my own life, but I have not had to face the challenges she has. Well done Mary!😇

Interesting and understated - just like the lady herself
As you’d expect really – Mary comes across in this book exactly as she does on screen: likeable, a mischievous sense of humour, not afraid to voice an opinion when the situation warrants (but always politely). Mary describes her life, explaining how she found herself as a cookery writer and television presenter, right through to the surprising success of the Great British Bake Off. It isn’t always a positive story – Mary suffered from polio as a child and lost one of her own children in a car crash. This is an interesting biography of a national treasure.

If in doubt buy it!
Such a fantastic and gripping read. I loved reading about Mary’s idilic childhood, and her life after she left school. I read this book on the train and was always rather disappointed when I got to my stop as it meant I had to stop reading! A fascinating insight into the life of the nation’s sweetheart.

Bought as a gift, I wanted to keep it
I bought this for a friend; to be honest, it was a bit of a rush purchase as I ran out of time, but when it arrived I looked at it and wanted to keep it for myself. A lovely mix of the story of Mary's life, with photos, interspersed with recipes for favourite foods that are memorable in parts of her life. It was a shame I didn't have more time to read it before I had to gift wrap it. I've put it on my wish list and hope someone might buy it for me sometime!
