I don't know if it's reliable or not. Some days the ear reading reads correctly on my daughter and I, most days it says we have a temp although we feel fine. My son and husband always read 98.6 by ear. The forehead option is worthless. I will be buying a different brand soon, but for now this is what we have. At least it hasn't broken after a dozen uses.
