Useful intro to the Krishna movement
This book is a compilation of articles and interviews with Sri Prabhupada. They were from the early years of the Krishna movement, so a lot of it is very basic indeed as he explained himself and his beliefs to a raw audience. The interviews cover similar ground, so the amount of material that is novel is quite limited. The articles are from the journal of the ISKCON movement and are not too technical and often develop ideas more thoroughly. It explains that the current age is one of strife and that past methods of spiritual nourishment are ineffective in this age. The Maha Mantra or Hare Krishna chant can operate to elevate one's spirit and ultimately break the cycle of re-birth.There is a limited insight into the renunciate life style of devotees, but not a lot for the rest who do not fully live the almost monastic lifestyle. There are clues, but no clear statements of this no doubt more common lifetsyle.I did come away with a great regard for the religion of India, which is inclusive and non-dogmatic. It appears to be a religion that, once understood properly in the West, could replace a lot of the more dictatorial sects we see in the headlines and be a true religion for the liberal 21st century. It is not a religion of compromoise, but it simply starts from a different point and does not need to claim to be unique and the only way as a result. As a rough guide to the basics, this book is fine. It does not really help with guiding further enquiry, other than to encourage contact with the ISKCON movement, but it draws heavily on the Bhagavad Gita and that would be a useful next step for most. Sri Prabhupada translated the Gita (or Lord's Song) into english and his translation is the best selling version in the West.
