Q: How do you attach the bag to a i-beam does the top of the chain open to loop through a hole?

Thank you for your query. The 4-panel chain provided with the punch does not open and is designed to be attached with a D-shackle that is attached to a hook on a wall bracket or a ceiling hook. You can get a separate chain from a local hardware store to loop around an I-beam then dangle the 4-panel chain from it.
