Dayton's Department Store (Images of America: Minnesota)

Star merchandiser in downtown Minneapolis
Dayton's --- an institution and generous family from Minnesota. Dayton's was part of the group that built the first Target in Roseville, MN. The book gives us a lot of photos from the Dayton family and their retail business through the decades. I worked in the downtown Minneapolis store for three years in the 1950s. Definitely a book to own if you remember the "good old days."

Dayton's-Those Were the Days!
At one time, working at Dayton's was a rite of passage for youthful Minneapolis residents. In the early 1970's, I worked as a salad and sandwich girl in what was once the Skyroom kitchen. That was back when Dayton's and downtown Minneapolis were enjoyable places to spend the day.Lunch at The Oak Grill Room is a Christmas season shopping traditon that we haven't given up. The book is interesting, brings back fond memories & has great photos.... but I wish it was longer! Still, it presents a very nice slice of history & nostalgia. I most definitely wish Dayton's Department Store was still around, but alas, time marches on.

A good history of Dayton's, complete with pictures
I do collect books on department stores, like this one, for example. I deducted one star, because, for someodd reason, my copy of the book has pages 105 & 106 printed twice. Otherwise, it was a good book.

Minnesota's own.
Breaks my heart that it is gone. Dayton's were a great family and created a Dept. store that was all inclusive. The good old days were truly the good old days'

Treasure of a book for a treasure of a store
Enjoyed the book a lot and learned many things about Dayton's early history I was not aware of (the clubs, promotions and large letters on the building just above street level.Nice piece on George Dayton's life and philosophies.Wish there would have been some additional photos and segments on the 1970's.Overall will satisfy your desire for bringing back the memories of the great store in downtown Minneapolis.

fantastic photos, made even better
fantastic photos, made even better, now, knowing about the imminent demise of the business in the building, right now. this place was a legend, and it's sad to know that this prime spot will close as a retail store in 2017. it's truly the end of an era, and not a pleasant end, either. sad.

My favorite store in print
Loved this book. I still miss this store, it was my first credit card I ever got at 18 so I have soft spot for it. I loved the Christmas season Holiday Display on the 8th floor.

thus saving myself a few dollars otherwise wasted on this single minded example of bad planning
Beware, this is a WOMAN'S book, written for and directed at women only. If you want text and photos of the fabric department, the kitchen department, the womens clothing department, this is the book for you. BUT... where are the equally interesting items for children? For men? They are there, occasionally, but drowned in the heavy handed deluge of womens fashions and womens interests. Where are the Christmas photos? There are a few, but nothing compared to the vast numbers of, well, I've mentioned that already. Where are the toy department photos and text? Do men ever shop here? Not according to this dreary presentation. Men wait and chat together as they watch their wives shop, see the photos. At least I bought a used copy of this book, thus saving myself a few dollars otherwise wasted on this single minded example of bad planning.

So so
I was hoping for more text and more images from the 80's and 90's but the book probably does focus on the periods of most interest for the majority and the sub title (Images of America) explains the lack of text. A good book but not quite what I was looking for.
