Important story to read, hear!
A harsh, make-you-think, piece of literature. Use of plain colloquial language made this important ‘telling of truth’ all the more vivid.

Inspired by a Real Reform School
Colson Whitehead’s “The Nickel Boys” was inspired by the real-life story of a reform school in Florida that operated for over a century and devastated the lives of thousands of children. Some of its residents died at the school and were secretly buried in a nearby field. In the novel, Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in Tallahassee, is determined to rise above the poverty into which he was born. But he is unjustly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy. He struggles during his time there to survive, maintain his principles and rise above the horrors of the academy and finds a friend in fellow resident Turner. But life at the academy becomes ever more perilous forcing them to a desperate decision.“The Nickel Boys” is a revealing reflection of how racism and oppression can stack the deck against young black men. Colson Whitehead employs a clever twist in the latter part of the novel which, although at first confusing, drives home what it takes for the oppressed to overcome the odds and build a life for themselves. Another gripping novel by the Pulitzer Prize novelist.

Bon moment
Se lit avec plaisir en anglais avec un contexte social/historique que l'on doit garder à l'esprit (et ce n'est pas si vieux) Et un élément inattendu.
