Let the Hunt begin
Hunt is a fun and challenging shooter, it can be frustrating at times but it's the fact that you are both a hunter and being hunted that keeps the tension.

I watched this game being streamed online with people playing co-op and it looked like fun but I wasn't overly interested in the fact it's online only, so I didn't bite for ages. Having zero like minded friends I'd have nobody to play with. You can team up with random players and i'm sure with the right person it's a blast, bur for now I hunt solo. I don't want to burden anyone else with my inadequacy. Not sure how long this game has been out there but I understand it has steadily been gaining popularity due to various streamers and that a lot of content has been added, maybe check it out again if you discovered this a while ago and thought it was lame.I heard the PS4 version was visually lacking compared to Series X and PC versions but have no way to compare. It's not Red Dead Beautiful 2, but nothing is and so I find nothing to complain about. PC and Series X are more powerful than PS4 so no surprise if the game looks better.I find this game hard but fair. It is also quite tense at times. It can be frustrating but not in the same way as COD, you can die in very similar fashion, taken out by another player you didn't even see but for some reason this doesn't aggravate me in the same way. I accept it. The inevitability factor of this isn't quite as high as COD like games. As a new player I have to dip my toes and I thoroughly expect to be sacrificed to the gaming Gods many, many times. This is the righteous path and it always yields results as it hard-wires the learning curve right into the centre of your head. Embrace defeat. Avoid the left-hand path for now.The loading times between matches seem lengthy at first but you eventually realise they are just long enough to do this and that then jump back into the next game. The match can be quite lengthy if you survive, best part of an hour.I have acquired a lot of FPS experience over the years so it was quite intuitive for me to pick up and play. I got through the training sequence relatively unscathed. Upon playing the main game it took me a while to realise the main monsters in the game that bring the big bounties are best avoided as a noob. Not only do you have to find the monster and defeat it but chances are by the time you find him you will be low on ammo. All the while there are other hunters maybe coming for the same prize. They can be solo, in pairs or trios. It's a new concept to me to find myself battling a boss monster and having to look over my shoulder the whole time. I've noticed that I'm not the only one who is a bad shot in a shoot-out with other hunters. It sounds like this game would be too hard for noobish solo players but this is not the case. I was struggling to kill other hunters at first (and still do), but the first time I did was epic. I seen one up on a platform from a distance, sniped him and then it occurred to me to wait and see if he had pals. His 2 pals come to revive him one at a time and so I easily took down a 3 man team. There is no shame in camping in this game. Nor is there shame in the fact all 3 were shot in the back. Another time I found 3 hunters outside a little hut deep in the swamp very early in the game, I turned a corner and they were all crammed into this little walkway and here's me with 2 pistolas.....so I started blasting. 3 of them went down under a hail of noob fire. The point of the main game is to hunt monsters, to survive, and to extract and get paid. Overall the point is to build up your hunter and unlock various traits and tools along the way, increasing your level as you go. Hunting other hunters is a choice. You get XP for killing other hunters but you may not see any in your game, or maybe you see one and you're low on ammo so you slink away to the extraction point instead. There is a Battle Royale type of mode called Quickplay, where the big bounties are off the map, regular monsters and other hunters become the focus, last man standing wins. I haven't played much of this mode and of course got myself shot to bits when I did. Seems like this is the place to be if you want practice against other hunters. You can extract any time although the journey to the extraction point will not always be easy. If you die you lose your hunter, all of his gear and you only retain half of the XP you have earned in this match. So you have to try look after your hunter while at the same time accepting his inevitable death. At this point I haven't survived more than 3 matches in a row. Cash earned and unlocks remain so you can either hire a new hunter at expense, or take on a noob hunter for free. The low-level enemies can give you a hard time and so you must devise tactics to deal with each type. Conserve ammo when you can. It's suggested you should also be as quiet as you can but this is optional. The map is huge with an interesting variety of locations. The sound is great but a bit weird at times. All around the compounds in game you find sound traps which will alert nearby enemies, it's a good mechanism but I find the noise a bit overblown, especially if the audio is coming from the TV. Stepping on broken glass sounds more like someone breaking a window. This game is best experienced with headphones for the directional audio cues, this will further immerse you in this world. Nothing quite like being stalked by Hell hounds when you can hear them but can't see them, or worse, when you can hear them specifically from one direction but you still can't see them. The guns are glorious. Re-load animation is well done. Attention to detail is great but I'm not sure who is taking the time to examine and zoom into the guns themselves to get a good look. This bit was so cool it made me want to start collecting olde time guns. I can't do that in real life so I guess this is the game for me. The guns are very situational, for some situations this or that gun will be completely useless, like when you're running away from some horror only to stumble out of the bush and straight into a pack of Hell hounds who are now within petting distance, you quickly realise the single-shot shotgun or rifle in hand is of little use in this particular situation.I can't give it 5 stars because that implies perfection so 4 stars it is. I''m curious as to how long this will continue to captivate my attention.
