A great lens at an affordable price!
I've paired this lens with a Sony A5000 camera exclusively for photography. The CV12M-E is the cine(ma) version of the RK12M-E. Optically the lenses are the same, the differences are as follows:1) The aperture and focus rings have gears on them to enable use with a focus pull system. This makes the lens a bit heavier and bigger, and turning gears with your fingers is slightly more unpleasant.2) The aperture is de-clicked, meaning it rotates smoothly like the focus ring - to me this is a non-issue.3) The aperture is measured in T stops instead of f-stops. Again, to me this is a non-issue.4) The focus and aperture markings are on the left side of the lens instead of the top.Build quality is absolutely excellent with a sturdy, heavy-duty metal body. I've seen in some reviews of the RK12M-E complaints about a sub-1mm play when mounted on the camera. This is absolutely not the case with the lens I got, it attaches firmly and won't budge. The aperture and focus rings move very, very smoothly and have sufficient resistance. The aperture ring will not move on its own, even if it's been de-clicked, so no worries there. The lens has an almost 100 degree field of view and though it's rectilinear there will be distortion along the edges. Care must be taken when framing shots, and it won't be appropriate for every kind of photography (e.g. this is probably a bad lens of up-close portraits, unless you want a comical look). The lens is fully manual meaning you adjust both the aperture and focus manually. To make this work you enable shutter release without the lens (the camera can't detect it, there are no electronics on the lens, also no EXIF data), you then turn on focus-peaking, and set the camera to Program mode. The shutter speed will still be set automatically based on the amount of light. You focus manually and shoot. Because of the wide angle, the manual focus is very easy and seldom needs adjustment, unless shooting subjects very close to the lens. The low light performance at f/2.0 (T 2.2) is what initially interested me in this lens and it absolutely delivers. See attached photos for some examples wide open (T 2.2) at night. If you are interested in wide angle photography it's a no brainer. It can be obtained for less than half the price of the Sony 10-18mm. At the 12mm focal length you won't miss the lack of stabilization and the Rokinon is a much, much faster lens. The night shots simply wouldn't be possible with the lower aperture of the Sony SEL1018.The only downside is the lack of EXIF data, but I can live with that. It's a really fun lens to use and I highly recommended for the Sony NEX and A5000/5100/6000 cameras.
