The packaging does not say hypoallergenic (however it does say No parabens, nanoparticles, laventer tea tree, petroleum oils, musk, propylene glycol, sulfates, gluten, soy or dairy so that would cover a lot of allergens). Go to www.originalsprout.com and you can see all of the ingredients (go to the ABOUT toolbar and click ingredients. On the middle right you'll see the hair gel and click on it). That would tell you if you are concerned about an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients.

Q: what's the difference betwen the styling balm and the hair gel?

I havnt bought the balm. But I assume its more of a sticky feel and can be applied on dry hair. Where the gel is more of a water based and applied best to wet hair. This kinda flakes just fyi.

Q: Is this safe if used around the eyes? I'm looking for a hair gel that will keep my Shih-Tzu's facial hair out of his eyes while it's growing out.

I can honestly say I'm not sure. It is extremely mild and natural however I personally would still be hesitant about getting it near the eyes.... I also don't know if it would even be worth attempting it--because this product is so mild and lightweight I would think after a good 30 min of running around and a few shakes of the head it probably would lose the hold... Maybe he just needs manly hair clips ;) good luck!
