This book is a great combination of history, culinary insights, and recipes centered on the rich food traditions of the Midwest. As a Chicago foodie I enjoyed learning more about local food businesses and bakeries.

Having randomly purchased this book, I can now say it is one of my favorites. Historically, this book passes along recipes from our nation's history with discerning interest and perspective. Early immigrants to this country gave all of us variety and flare in the kitchen. This book is so well written and researched its value goes beyond the average cookbook.

Bought this for a friend who is a baker. She loved it. I've tried the Abraham Lincoln cake and it is delicious!
