well that was different.
I purchased this as a replacement for our cats' bar chair. Yes the cat's. No she doesn't drink. The one I replaced, had the sinking lower and lower problem, Bought this in 2020 It is now failing. but with the opposite problem. It's slowly getting higher and higher. Our can is getting older, she's currently 18 years old, and I'm somewhat concerned about her jumping from one place to another with this chair. Not sure I'd use this again, but all in all, it's done a good job, and at first, was really hard for my husband and I to get it lowered to the height we wanted, but once we got there, it stayed put, but this morning it was an inch taller than last night. So when it fails, it could go either way. the cat is the only one sitting on this.

Replacement Chair Lift
I was worried that I wouldn't find the correct lift mechanism for my drafting chair. My wife said, "buy you a new chair and be done with it". I didn't want to spend $200 on a chair when all I needed was a new lift, so I took a chance. This one fit very nicely and my chair now works fine. I looked on the internet and found a video on how to change the cylinder but the guy was banging away on his chair on the video and took him several attempts to get it undone. A little backstory here about getting tapered shafts out. When I was a young guy, I was working on my car and the steering pieces had a similar fitting as these lift mechanisms. The end of the shaft is tapered and fits in a matching tapered hole. That way, the shaft, gets locked into place by the taper and that is what holds the pieces together. Well, as you can imagine, I was having trouble getting the tapered pieces apart an was on my way to the auto parts store to get a tool to remove the tapered shaft. My wife's day who lived through the depression was watching me and said "You want me to get that apart for you?" I looked at him like he was an old man who didn't know what he was talking about. Sure, I said. He asked for 2 (two) hammers which I got for him and he proceeded to tap on opposite sides of the fixture. With just a few taps, the joint separated. He smiled and I was flabbergasted. So back to the chair. If you take two hammers and tap simultaneously on both sides, on the part of the chair fitting that holds the top of the tapered shaft, it'll just pop out and you have 1/2 of the job finished. No fuss, No Muss..... The bottom, you can turn the chair base upside down and pound the old shaft out of the bottom. It's going to be discarded so it doesn't matter if you damage it getting it out.

BOOM much higher office chair.
I have had this Lab chair for about 8 years I bought it used off of craigslist years ago. It is a stupidly expensive (almost a grand) chair with a gas assist lift. When I moved into my new shop the gas assist started slowly sinking. The chair wasn't tall enough to begin with and with the sinking issue I needed to replace the cartridge. I contacted the mfg and they wanted 225.00 for a replacement cartridge. I found this one on amazon that not only would look original but it also solved a height issue I had with my new shops work bench. beating the old cartridge out was the hard part, Putting this one in took all of about 2 min. I can now loom over the top of my work bench if I want to. I almost need a step ladder to get on it now at max height!Love the product

Was a bit difficult to install, but that was expected.
Tried to install in work, but realized I'd have to put a bit more effort into it so I took the chair home. (I bought by own chair for work and it needed to be a bit taller.) I ended up taking the seat off, placed the base between two very close soft pine outside work tables and tapping away on the base till it came apart. With the new base the chair at it's lowest setting leaves me on my tiptoes, which is exactly what I wanted. It was a normal shorter office chair. I have longer legs. I also love taller stool like chairs. I had just added 5 inch wheels to my enclosed hutch desk at work to make it mobile, and needed my chair to be at least 4 inches taller.Would highly recommend. Well made and looks like it will hold up. But be prepared its not a quick instant install if the chair is together and been used a while as you need to tap everything apart.

fails after a year
it worked great for the first 11 months, then i had this sinking feeling. the seals must go after a year, because now i am adjusting it almost every day after almost exactly a year. i had to use a 12-ton hydraulic shop press to remove the old cylinder, hopefully this one will be easier to remove and replace.
