Kwikset 83260 SMARTKEY Reset Cradle 1/EA

I bought the cylinder reset cradle after I somehow managed to program a Kwikset lock with no key inserted, rendering the lock useless and locking me out of my room twice. I was able to get into my room through the window, fortunately, and take the lock out. Once the cradle arrived I used the cylinder removal tool which I already had and took the cylinder out of the lock, and followed the somewhat confusing instructions on the reset cradle. I don't think it took me more than 10 minutes to figure out how the cradle worked to know what was going on and had the lock reinstalled with my key working again. I bought the Kwikset locks because they were already installed in the house I rent; I wanted to add keyed doorknobs for the rooms I was subletting. Worked out great, plus I now have a full complement of tools to work with these locks, very handy. I'm only a small step away from being a Kwikset locksmith! Neat!For those who aren't familiar with Kwikset: Kwikset locks have a small tool and receiver on the cylinder which allows you to reprogram the lock for a new key without having to take the lock apart or install a new cylinder. To use the cylinder reset cradle, you will need a cylinder removal tool for your lock, typically only $3-$5 or so here on Amazon. The cylinder removal tool does not come with instructions: check YouTube and go through the videos until you find clear instructions for use. Be careful not to bend the removal tool, if you do, you are using it wrong or applying too much force. You will pop the cylinder out of the door knob; next, there is a small retention clip that you will have to remove to free the cylinder from the rest of the knob. Once you release this clip, the cylinder will slide out. There are 3 flats on the cylinder, and the cylinder will only fit in the reset cradle one way. The key entry will face up and the 3 flats must align with the cradle. When you've inserted the cylinder correctly, it will sit flush inside the cradle except for the very top finished portion of the cylinder. Now follow the instructions on the cradle. When you've finished the process correctly, it will appear that the key will spin freely in the cylinder - this is normal. If the key does not spin, the cylinder has not reset. The cylinder will not function until it is inserted back into the knob (don't forget the retaining clip!) and mated with the other side of the doorknob. You do not to install in the door to test, you can test by joining the two knobs together and using the key and interior locks. Hope that helps someone.

After some years my front door Kwikset deadbolt refused to lock/unlock from the outside. I was facing a very tedious and a little difficult disassembly of the lock cylinder in order to do a manual reset. This tool was just what was needed to make the whole process much simpler and easier. Just the fact that the tool depresses all the tumbler pins at once is the secret. I did not experience any of the "hard to use" things mentioned in other reviews. Treating the tool with respect, since the tumbler pin depressors are a little fragile gets the job done. The instructions were clear enough to make it work on the first try. And, it worked perfectly on my older Kwikset lock.

This does the job, but it took me awhile to get the hang of it. There are diagrams of what to do on the tool as well as the written instructions. You have to take the lock apart to use this and that is a pain, but we own a number of rental properties and like being our own locksmith. The smart key system makes it easier to rekey your own locks if you have the old key, and if you do not, this tool saves the day,

As a person who owns a few rental properties, I taught myself how to rekey locks. A tedious procedure but it saved me money in the long run by not calling a locksmith or buying new locks everytime a tennant moved out. I recently purchased a home and the previous owner said he did not have any keys to the house. In case you are wondering, we had to leave the garage door unlocked and make sure the garage was closed when we left the house. Luckily, all the door locks had these Kwikset locks that you can rekey without removing all the parts. Unfortunately, to rekey a lock, you have to have the original key. So, after a little research I found this item. I was able to rekey all of my locks within a short amount of time without having the original key or having to disassemble the internal workings of the lock. Nothing short of a miracle in my book. Even if you don't need one, I would buy one and put it in the toolbox. Highly recommended.

This little device is great! It saves the day by letting you use the old deadbolt and installing new keys

I have a kwikset smartkey entry door knob that the correct key did not work. Took out the cylinder and followed the printed instructions to reset the lock. Works like a charm afterwards. Not sure I will be using this much, but it worked for me.

This makes working on the locks easier. Recommend if you have a lot of locks to maintain.
