Pure Class
A blinding and relentless thriller that delivers on every promise of the genre; suspenseful, surprising, shocking, brutal, sexy, and satisfying. 30 years later, this hasn't aged a jot.Scorsese's reputation rests mainly on his New York-set dramas from the 70s and late 80s, but he is/was also a gonzo genre director, and in Cape Fear - made right after the career-high of Goodfellas - he really went for it. De Niro's performance as Max Cady is genuinely scary - he was in his early mid-life prime here - and Nic Nolte matches him beat for beat. The film is set in the swampy South, and has a weird sultry funk around it, a million miles from Scorsese's urban east coast stomping ground. It's a testament to Scorsese's greatness as a director that the atmosphere here is as vivid and electric as in his classic New York movies. There are so many great moments visually and in performance in this film, it's surprising to me that the film has somehow fallen off his all-time list, but I'd put it above everything else from his 90s output.A superbly entertaining thriller that only he could've made.
