WINNER / Best Director - John Walker / Atlantic Film FestivalSearching for the Northwest Passage - The Story of Sir John FranklinIn 1845, celebrated British explorer Sir John Franklin, along with his crew of 128 men, set sail from England in search of a fabled passage west, which they believed would lead them to the riches of the Orient. None of them were ever seen again.A search party found no evidence of any crew or wreckage. The answer to the mystery was eventually solved by John Rae, a lone doctor travelling the Arctic Circle on foot. His findings were so horrific that those back home - including Sir John's widow, Lady Franklin, as well as Charles Dickens - waged a public campaign to discredit Rae and subsequently incriminate an entire nation of Northern Inuit people.

Not a movie but an informal documentary.
I've watched quite a few documentaries about the Franklin Expedition and was hoping to see a non-fiction movie., especially after watching the masterful series The Terror (based on the Simmons novel). I was expecting a movie dramatization. It's not one of the more interesting or comprehensive documentaries. The latter part focuses on descendants of Inuit who witnessed the Franklin Expedition and a debate with Charles Dickens' descendant (his great grandson if I recall correctly), a man who still adhered to Charles Dickens' belief that British sailors would never resort to cannibalism and implied the Inuit invented the story to cover up attacks or a possible massacre of Franklin sailors. In the end, there was a reconciliation of sorts. I think this documentary only appeals to those with a deep interest in the search for Franklin and 19th century views of the disaster.

Very interesting Twist of a 19th Century Mystery.
The facts are good. And although I would have liked to see more of Sir John Franklin, his wife, and members of his expedition, the history of this mystery is fascinating and to see the decendent of the great writer of Charles Dickens and the decedent of the Inuits who came in touch with the Franklin Expedition alone is well worth the price of this DVD. If you like historical expeditions, you'll love the movie, "Passage!"

Don't waste your time
This really isn't a movie on the Franklin Expedition, it's more a movie about making a movie on the Franklin Expedition. It seems like they wanted to make a great movie on the expedition, but ran out of funds, so settled on this.

The Passage is a brilliantly written movie. Beautiful scenery, great characters, and well written story that makes you not expect the ending. The ending haunted me so bad I could not sleep that night! I believe the ending was well written and satisfactory for me.For those who don't live in the UK but would like to see this movie and other movies from the UK or any country of your choice, get a multi regional dvd player and buy this movie now!
