Almost supreme celebration of 90 years? Of Decca record label.
This four disc set of Decca: The supreme record company - released in 2020; to commemorate the ninetieth anniversary of said label; is an elaborate set and includes some excellent selections of artists who have recorded on Decca over the years. Some seminal songs are included.i.e. disc one: 1929-1960; We'll meet again - Vera Lynne,Rock around the clock - Bill haley and his comets and Rock island line - Lonnie Donegan and Chris Barber.'forces sweetheart',Rock n roll pioneers and Skiffle and jazz legends - respectively.Decca were and still are a very eclectic minded record label, and the variety of tracks on all four discs, certainly highlight this trait.I'm not going to review every track by every artist included - take quite a while - but the powers that be at Decca, could never be accused of running a specialist, niche label - Just about every music genre is included on this release.David Whitfield,Tom Jones,Small faces,The Bachelors,The Goons,The Moody blues,David Bowie,Thin Lizzy,Adam and the ants (punk/new wave leaning) - and classical inclusion: Nessun Dorma - Live in Rome - by The three tenors - closes disc four (final cd) on the collection.there you go - cherry picked a few for you. This is an excellent, but not quite indispensable collection of 90 years of this iconic record company.Rock legends: The Rolling stones - recorded their most well known 1960's classics on the Decca label, but not a single song of their's appear on this collection - quite bizarre!Another (constructive) criticism,is the time frame.disc one: 1929-60 D two: 1960-65 D3: 1966-72 and D4: 1970-2011.not quite chronological. So why is the time frame truncated at 2011 - thus 82 years - and not 2019.This is supposed to be ninety years of Decca records - very strange!Apart from the above gripes, I have enjoyed listening to all four discs on the collection.Well presented in card board slipcase, superior quality jacket sleeves and inner sleeve booklet with very good track info - this is a nigh on perfect release of the ninetieth anniversary of this iconic and 'supreme' record label/company.N.B. No sleeve notes of: The Decca story - despite a credit for Daryl Easlea - esteemed music writer - getting a credit for helping to compile the set - looks like they're trying to plug his (along with) Darren Henley's book of a similar name instead.P.S. excellent - must be remastered - sound quality throughout.
