Herbalism or healthism?
The book was beautifully photographed and most of the recipes are interesting. However, I was really surprised, and disappointed, by the low-key/subtle yet insidious healthism throughout the book. And also surprised by the political commentary and author's self reflection and opinions woven throughout. Comments like "screw you Monsanto," when talking about GMOs seem trivial and immature. Really? Was that really necessary? We all know (or most have heard) about the issues of GMOs, but wow, you're super cool, brave and hip for actually calling them out like that! I mean really, give me a break. As mentioned, I was surprised and taken aback by the subtle healthism in the author commentary. Comments describing how using these recipes and other suggestions in her book can help people live a healthier lifestyle, especially when combined with being really mindful of what we're putting in our bodies, eating healthfully, and exercising. She didn't use those exact words, I'm paraphrasing, but you get the gist. Again, my reaction is just..really?? Granted, I'm sure some people have no issue with what she said, and I'm sure some readers got her book for that very reason of trying to pursue a "healthy lifestyle." But the reason I'm disappointed and was taken aback is because this book has been promoted as an **herbalism** book, an intro to herbalism. Not a health book or dieting book or so-called healthy lifestyle book. That's why I bought this book, to learn more about herbalism, not to be lectured on how these recipes will help me be "healthier."There's no denying using herbal recipes can provide natural, positive health outcomes, studies have been shown to validate this. And I'm all for solving health issues or needs naturally as much as possible. I just don't need to be lectured to or politicized about it. You say you wrote an herbalism book, so give me an herbalism book. Not a health/"natural diet" book.Lastly, I find most of the recipes are inaccessible to the average reader. Several of the recipes require "fresh milky oat tops" and she stressed repeatedly how they have to be fresh, and explains "you can find fresh milky oat tops tincture online, if you can't make it yourself, but really try to make it yourself if you can. " Out of curiosity I looked for fresh milky oat tincture online. What I found was ridiculously expensive, and/or it's not even available right now because it's not in season. And not everyone has means, space, or the right climate to grow their own plants. Anyway, I suppose it's partially my own fault, I should have expected some ingredients would be hard to find but I just don't know how realistic some of these recipes are if you don't also live on a farm or have your own plot of land in the country like the author. So also keep that in mind if you buy this book...buying ingredients online can get expensive, and of course isn't the same as growing them yourself. Growing them yourself is more fun of course! :) So think ahead if you can plant in containers or have space in your yard or elsewhere to grow yourself. And/or also if you can source them locally from other growers nearby. Otherwise it can get expensive getting them online. So anyway, this is my experience with the book and why I returned it. Take all this with a grain of salt, you may buy it and like it. But I just wanted other people to know what to expect and what my experience was with this book.
