Depends on the size of the child. I bought it in a medium for my 6 year old. He weighs 55 lbs and is 3'11. It was a little too long.

Per my experience, Large will be better. Especially if its on the top of another dress. I bouggt medium for my son and it was a quiet fit for 45 _48 inch and was able to use another year.
