Any IP Camera worth its salt will be capable of sending images offsite over a basic internet connection (without port-forwarding or doing anything to compromise your router's security) to an offsite ftp server. ftp is a generic, non-proprietary protocol. I use a couple of different ftp services to upload camera images to. They are not free, but they are not "proprietary". Setting up the cameras so they do exactly what you want (configuring network parameters, configuring camera parameters, record always vs record only on motion events, etc.) is not trivial and takes a lot of internet research and trial & error. Additionally, most good IP Cameras these days will allow you to internally install an SD card that you can simultaneously record to. The images on such a card are not easily accessible without an NVR, although you can use a computer to connect to the camera's website together with a browser plugin to view recordings on the card. I don't like the browser plugins because they typically are not 'signed' and so I don't trust them for computer security reasons. In an emergency, such as after a break-in, you can always disassemble the camera, take out the SD card and insert it into a computer. Research any camera you are considering on the manufacturers' website, and do enough research to understand all of the details before you buy.

You need to read the listing very carefully. Some say don't update firmware things like that. I have a hikvision nvr and cameras all us version but had to shop around to make sure I got all us stuff.
