Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer

Absolutely charming book!
This was so adorable I could hardly stand it! It had the best heart and a good amount of silliness. I wasn't in love with the major conflict, but this book isn't really meant for an adult. Maybe the target audience would be fine with it. I have no idea how I would've been convinced to read this as a kid, but I would hope once it was in my hands, I'd have liked it too. I hope many kids love it and just have the best time!

My avid chicken-loving daughter LOVES this series!
My 10 year old raises her very own chickens. She is often spouting off random chicken facts and tidbits, for she has done allll the research about them. So when I found this series I knew it was totally her. And it turns out 90% of the facts she throws at me are actually from this book! Its one of the only books I have ever heard her actually crack up while reading. Very cleverly written, lots of imagination mixed with real chicken facts but hidden so kids wouldn't even know they were actually learning! But mostly a super funny book, as my daughter said in her own words. She hopes a third will be out in the future, for not enough authors write fictional books on this subject.

Looooove this book!
We purchased this book as a cool summer read for my 4th grade son. We own chickens and were curious about how much we could connect to it. We both became very invested in the story of Sophie and her chickens. We made so many connections to it. Aside from the chickens, Sophie is a Latina and the book offers so many references to our culture. I highly recommend!!!!

Enjoyable across age groups
Both my 7 year old daughter and my 5 year old son LOVED it. She really liked Sophie, he loved the chickens and loved the questionnaires. Very rarely are they excited about the same book. They couldn't wait to see when she will find the next unusual chicken. I loved Sophie too and I think the author has her finger on the kids minds here. Kids don't need a big world saving adventure every time. They need relatable characters like Sophie. The unusual chickens add to the story to make this a really enjoyable book.

This book is DELIGHTFUL!
What I Loved about this book (in no particular order): THE FORMAT. This story is told through letters from Sophie to her grandmother and great uncle (both deceased), letters between Sophie and the mysterious Agnes of the Redwood Farm Supply Company, a correspondence course for looking after chickens, recipes, newspaper articles, amazing line drawings and a quizz (as per the quiz, I would make a very excellent chicken farmer!). SOPHIE'S SUNNY-SIDE UP, RESOURCEFUL, PLUCKY ATTITUDE. I fell in love with that girl. How the DIVERSITY blends into the story and feels realistic. Sophie has brown skin, and her mother is Latino. Sophie is aware they are in the minority in the small town. At one point, they are even mistaken for migrant workers. ALL THE CHICKEN FACTS. Because there's just something about chickens, right? Lastly, the HUMOR.Highly recommended. Quit clucking and go get yourself a copy! My full review is here: [...]

Girl seeks to solve a mystery on the farm her family inherited
My son is reading this for school. We are loving it. It’s a very relatable Mystery. The characters are diverse and it’s creatively written from a child’s perspective through letters to her relatives who have passed away. Love the connection to past generations.

Unusual and Amazing Sophie!
I love epistolary (letter writing) novels for MG readers. Kelly Jones found a unique voice in Sophie Brown. Her novel is fun and interesting. Readers in grades 3-6 will enjoy reading about Sophie 's poultry farming adventure with the mysterious, unusual chickens she learns to raise.

Petty it's so short!
"Great story, well written but a bit too short" was the impression of my 12-year old after reading the book.
