Informative, Entertaining, written for everyone not just San Francisco residents
Reads like a book in addition to being a cook book. It's clear that better quality food is a passion for the author. My buddy lived in San Fran and constantly talked about Bi-Rite.Very informative for a noob like me. You can take your time reading the book before the recipes or go right to the recipes. I guarantee the food will taste better if you cook with quality ingredients based on the author's suggestions.I love how author explains the difference between quality foods and not so good quality by talking about ingredients, additives, and processing. Gives reader tips on how to look for your own quality foods in your own grocery stores. Doesn't push his own store, like "You can find only at Bi-Rite".I am not a cook or a chef and found book easy to follow, and great for rainy days. I actually found a WONDERFUL tasting jam at my grocery store based on the tops of the author. Mind blown ha. My foodie brother who only eats organic found the book informative too, and he did know a lot about what to look for with quality ingredients but he did learn some new things too.A+

I Would Love To Eat My Way Through This Book
I love Bi-Rite Market and so I totally expected to love the book too. It is beautifully presented and well written and a pleasure to read. with comments on food and and 90 recipes. It is a very useful book no matter how or where you shop. Hints and pointers on fruit, veggies, sandwiches, desserts, dairy, meat etc.. I learned many new things just thumbing through it as soon as it arrived. It is an encyclopedia of food. You will be referring to it again and again as I do, or just pursuing it for new information and the sheer delight of reading about good food. The recipes have pictures and very clear instructions and an explanation of the ingredients.I like that it also includes information on farmers and the origin of some of their products. It contains many clear and beautiful pictures. This is a heavy book - that's how much excellent information is in it. It would make a much appreciated gift and I intend to buy several more for friends. If you ever are in San Francisco, make an effort to visit the market ... hard parking and always crowded and can be expensive, but hey it's only money - what better way to spend it than on fabulous food and the best smoked salmon this side of New York. We think it surpasses Zabar's.

Good resource!
This book is an absolutely wonderful resource. There are explanations of how to buy, store, cook, and use each food product (beans, citrus, meat, everything!). I love all the information the authors give. They don't also give a ton of detail at times, but enough for you to understand. For example, they don't fully break down the different cocoa percentages in chocolate and they names those percentages correspond to, but they do explain enough that the reader can pay attention when shopping. I am trying to buy new foods/produce I haven't before, so this book gives me ideas of what to try and how to the best grapefruit, etc. Exactly what I wanted! There are also many recipes throughout the book located at the end of each section, so that the recipes are related to the topics just discussed. The Produce section is broken down into seasons, and Butcher Counter (meat) section is broken down into animals, etc. Some recipe examples: white bean puree with prosciutto crespelle, delfina's spaghetti, chocolate sour cream bundt cake with chocolate glaze, butternut squash latkes, delicata squash salad with fingerling potatoes and pomegranate seeds, etc. I have yet to make any of the recipes, but I have starred many. I mainly bought the book as a shopping resource. There is a helpful index for looking for recipes.Overall AMAZING purchase! I highly recommend the book.

Amazing cooking resource
Bi-Rite: Eat Good Food is a beautiful cookbook to look at and to hold. It has amazing pictures on every page, and its matte finish adds to its high quality. The authors have a very clear writing style that makes you, as the reader, feel as if you have been walking through the store with them as you read the book. The authors' philosophy on food is interspersed with detailed descriptions of many foods you may have seen in the supermarket but didn't buy because you weren't sure how to use them. Each section of the store is a chapter in the book. After reading the produce chapter, I bought some persimmons for the first time, and I was pleased with the result. The recipes are easy to follow, and the information regarding storage of fruits and vegetables takes the mystery out of getting the most out of the food you buy. The layout of each page makes reading all of the information included in it easy to understand. All in all, reading this book is like spending an afternoon with a group of people in an amazing market who would like to share all of their life's learning with you. I wish I lived closer so I could actually visit the store!

Passionate and rational
As a person who enjoys selecting and preparing wholesome delicious food for myself and my children I very much enjoyed this book. As a manual, there is a concise shopping guide at the beginning. Perhaps like me, you've read about which olive oils are better and what is the deal with fair trade chocolate and sometimes remember but often forget. Making thoughtful choices can be overwhelming. But, this is a clear manual as well as a lovely cookbook. The stories of the food purveyors, farmers and stewards are passionate and informative and I have already made several recipes. Yes. I think you'll enjoy this. Enjoy!

Spend your grocery money wisely
This book is a primer on what good food is, from choosing the perfect peach to the different types of olive oil. It includes great recipes, too. This book will always be on my phone's kindle app so that I have it as a reference when I go to grocery stores and farmers markets. It's also a pretty book, designed well.
