action packed thrilling but totally implausible
I have read many of his books and all his first ones, say before 2000, were incredibly good in a new genre, the "corporate thriller". I caught up with him recently and this book is once again very thrilling, action-packed, with a great hero, but the storyline was for me beyond plausibility. Some guy disappears, his brother starts looking for him, the villains are on the lookout, all fine and great, but the unfolding plot left me asking too many questions, and seemed really "too much". The ending left me wanting. Overall a disappointment but this author has a writing style I really love and I will continue looking at his books. He can't win every time :)

Good, not great
I like Finder's novels, and Paranoia and Power Play were both very good.Considering this is the first in a series with Nick Heller, I hoped that this would be also five star quality but at times it reminded me too much of Lee Child (a negative in my view). In Child's books, Jack Reacher can do anything and get anyone and is pretty much indestructible. Let's have someone who's a bit more normal and down to earth and vulnerable (whilst still winning the day). That said, the novel has plenty of twists and turns and builds gradually enticing you to read more to find out what's going on.Good, not great.

First Nick Heller.
Lee Child sets the scene with his glowing review of this book to which I heartily agree with.A mix of a dysfunctional family, shady and menacing Government agencies and a heady mix of mind bogglingtechno gear for the modern day spy.A really cool hero. Can't wait to read the next Heller.Joseph Finder is new to me having discovered him on the Harrogate Crime Festival programme. I noticed he was on the same platformas Dennis Lehane. Another firm favourite of mine. Doing the research I purchased 'Paranoia' What a brilliant novel. My advice to all lovers of solid crime and thriller novels, seek Joseph Finder out.Unfortunately you won't find him in Waterstones but you wiil on Amazon!Roy Walker

Very Good
This was not my normal kind of book but I did enjoy it. I felt though that the ending was a wee bit rushed and did disappoint me. However, the rest of the book was excellent and I would certainly try Joseph Finder's other books.

A refined Reacher
Another character driven series, and it's a great opening book. Couldn't put it down, I don't think Heller would take Reacher in a fight, but he's a more rounded character. If you're into the Reacher series you'll be into this.
