Well worth going for, or an excellent gift
This very high quality and heavy book represents exceptionally good value. The pictures are superb. The text is well-written and informative too, even if the final third of the book is clearly given over to promoting the new Indians. Even that part is still interesting and in depth too, and one supposes that Polaris, the current owners of Indian, may have subsidised the book's publication? Whether or not that is the case, an excellent book and highly recommended.

Wow!
As a former (and possibly future) Harley-Davidson owner and a current Indian Chieftain owner, I found "The Harley-Davidson and Indian Wars" very interesting and informative, but unfortunately it was published just before the new Polaris/Indian era began. Thus, it ends on a rather sad note for the Indian Motorcycle and its future, with Harley-Davidson triumphant and enduring. The present volume, published in 2016, is more comprehensive in many ways than that other book, especially as it includes the newest incarnation of the Indian brand in 2014. For those of us who have been in love with Indian Motorcycles for many years, this book offers a delicious feast of the history and beauty of Indian motorcycles, including a bit of the history leading up to 1901 and George Hendee's first production motorized bicycles. Often such books are labors of love but not necessarily fluent literary works. In this case, however, the text is well written and orderly. The images are generally excellent, and even most of the old photos are well rendered.Whole books could be published on each phase of Indian Motorcycle history, including its most recent Polaris resurgence. The author of this book has done an excellent job of covering the most important periods and the evolution of this iconic American motorcycle, and gives ample attention to its resurrection around 2011. Of course, we can't understand the Polars/Indian story without a little understanding the other Polaris incursion into the motorcycle industry with the Victory V92C beginning around 1997. Whereas Polaris designed the Victory as a completely new bike that was not modeled after traditional American V-twins, the new Indian, by contrast, was designed to be a thoroughly modern motorcycle while maintaining as much as possible of the look and feeling of the older Indians, especially those of the 1940s. Looking through this book, we see the DNA of the older Indians carried through and honored with each new iteration and improvement of the Indian models, including early artists' conceptions of the newest Indian models. The author accomplishes a daunting task here, covering 115 years of Indian Motorcycle history in only 224 pages. It is a real feast for the eyes. There are lots of coffee-table books around on various motorcycle brands, but this is probably the best I've encountered so far. Many readers will find themselves skipping through much of the more technical narrative. I confess that I am less interested in the gradual mechanical improvements and technology and more interested in the aesthetics and riding quality of each new model. I find myself looking closely at how one rides those old bikes with hand shifts, foot-operated clutches, and scarily inadequate brakes. However, I also find the technology interesting, especially since much of it was so far ahead of its time and the competition. Harley's beautiful new Milwaukee 8 boasts four valves per cylinder; Indian motors could claim that feature more than seventy years ago. As we sadly discover in this book (as well as in the "Harley-Indian Wars"), Indian motorcycles were not doomed by the engineers' technology or the bikes' quality, but by the company bean-counters and board of directors, who cut all the wrong corners. This book is a genuine achievement in setting the record straight.
