The Naked Gun 33 1/3 - The Final Insult

One of the Best Comedies You'll See!
Absolute classic; they certainly don't make them this good anymore!Watched it for the first time as an adult, and I had missed so much of the adult humor when I was a kid. This movie has a superb mixture of low-brow and high-brow humor, and the cast expertly plays their roles. The music is fire, and the pacing of the movie keeps you eager to see what happens next, but doesn't move so fast that you don't have time to soak in the jokes. You'll love this movie if you have a good 1990s sense of humor! If you're a crybaby snowflake, you might wanna skip this one, as comedy this funny isn't for you.

Just Go With It
The grandaddy of "The Naked Gun" franchise is "Airplane!" (1980), in which everyone—including the actor himself—discovered that Leslie Nielsen had spent most of his career playing serious heroes or villains while a deadpan imp was begging to be set free. Thus was born a second act in this performer's life, disproving Scott Fitzgerald's claim that "there are no second acts in American lives." Maybe Nielsen doesn't disprove it. He was Canadian.Probably the best "Naked Gun" was the original (1988). I can't keep straight most of what happens in its two sequels because they blur together. As with "Airplane!," "Naked Gun" stories are the thinnest clotheslines on which to pin as much slapstick as two hours can hold. Peppered by some funny lines, sight gags commandeer the proceedings, which explains why the end credits thank by name some 267 stunt men and women, or so it seems. (Keep watching the final credits as they crawl over Ira Newborn's brassy big-band closer: they're filled with silly puns, cracked Easter eggs, and wonderful non sequiturs.) Some of the humor is bawdy and will offend sensitive souls, but the raunch factor is low. These are movies about human stupidity, not meanness. When it comes to deadpanning, Priscilla Presley is every bit as good as Nielsen. George Kennedy and O. J. Simpson supply the requisite dolt quotient. This I do remember: "33 1/3: The Final Insult" reaches its thirty-minute climax at Hollywood's Academy Awards: a self-important sitting duck just waiting to be taken down by buffoonery. When you've had enough of real life—and in mid-2020 I'm nearing the end of my tether—"The Naked Gun" is there to transport you back to The Three Stooges. Life is too serious to miss medicinal doses of hearty silliness.

Dreben is back again to save the day..
I love the Naked Gun series. All 3 movies have a certain charm and wit to them that just isn't matched in other satire series. The first Naked Gun movie is probably one of the funniest movies I have ever seen hands down. The second was good but for some reason it just never seemed to come into its own. This one is a strange movie in that only one of the original writers (David Zucker) did the script while the other two were just producers this time around. It has parts that are better then the second one but other parts that just aren't funny as they want to be. It's a strange movie in that you will find parts that were well done and creative but then you will see things that are just stretching and well to put it plainly, just not funny. The story continues right where the second left us. Frank Dreben and Jane finally tie the knot and settle down to become a family. Dreben has to give up his police job as he promised. Of course things aren't as easy as that, the couple seems to be having some marital problems as Jane wants a kid and for some reason Frank just can't make it happen. To make matters worse Ed and Nordburg need Frank to come back for one more mission and when Jane finds out she leaves him. Dreben winds up going into prison undercover to find out the plans of the would be terrorist who wants to target the Oscars with a bomb that will go off once the evelope is opened revealing the best actor. The opening and ending sequences are the best part of the movie. We have an Untouchables spoof at the start which was quite amusing and in classic Naked Gun humor and we have the whole situation at the Oscars that will remind you a bit of the baseball sequence at the end of the first movie. This alone ranks this better then the second movie but its everything in between that slows the movie down and makes it a little boring at times. Frank in Jail, Jane running away in a Thelma and Louise type spoof, a visit to the sperm hospital.. all fill up the middle and while they have their slight chuckles they are no where near the humor and wit and non stop laughs that we had previously. The second one still seemed to flow correctly within the series, popping out situations and running gags that were constant. This one just seems to be missing that extra umph to put it over the top. The movie is fun and enjoyable though and a worthy addition to the Naked Gun series. Leslie Nielson still has it and probably always will. He plays his character flawlessly and as you would expect. There are a lot of cameos in this one like Weird Al and Vanna White and Mary Lou to name a few that make for some interesting moments. The rest of the cast from the previous are intact except there is no mayor or commish this time to call the shots. When I first saw the movie in theaters I didn't laugh as much as I should have but after seeing it again on DVD I found myself laughing at things that probably were just over my head when I saw it 10 years ago.Bottom line, Its not as good as the first and has its moments with being on the same level as 2 1/2 but overall its a great way to end a great series and I do recommend this to everyone, but I would also say buy the other two as well to get the full flavor. This on its own just won't work as well if you have not seen the others to reference to and get the complete picture of how this series works. This definitely could have been better and perhaps if the original 3 writers did it it would have been but its still quite amusing at points and gets a big A for effort.

Zany, crazy, over the top
How funny this is for the viewer may depend on the age of the viewer. For those who saw it in original release, the huge number of cameos and the relevant jokes will probably hit all the right notes. The movie fit into a pattern of movies released during that time, with hundreds of jokes thrown out just to see which ones would stick. And Leslie Nielsen played his part to perfection. Lots of sight gags and nothing taken seriously. It is a roller coaster ride, but newer viewers may not know some of the references and some of the characters. Whatever, the film is a real laugh fest.

Very Funny!
I liked this better than NG 2-1/2 which, apparently, generally got better reviews. I laughed pretty much all the way through and was engaged by the story. Yes, there was unintended misogyny and racism. We have made a little progress since then. Also, I wondered why OJ Simpson acted a little goofier in this one than the previous one. Was it the director's fault?

A quality film
Such a great film, let down by the missing special features of the Dvd.I bought this because I love the film and wanted it in High Def. but I am keeping the Dvds also because they contain the audio commentary, not found on the blu-ray.The picture was very grainy and only marginally better than the dvd. Basically, stick with the dvd as its better value for money. The high rating is for the film, rather than for the Blu-ray itself.
