Practical Tools for Foster Parents has been an excellent resource for preparing for my foster parenting journey. Down to earth tips, real life examples, covers a wide range of issues with common sense guidance. Specific tips with words to use, what might happen (good and bad) - very very honest about particular outcomes. It even addresses what to dow hen the children still don't listen or don't make better choices - what to do when you lose your cool (because all parents do!) - when to step back a bit and when to stay on top of a situation.Not only do I feel a bit more prepared for foster parenting (can anything ever truly prepare you!?), I feel stonger in my parenitng skills with my own child as well.I highly recommend this book for all foster parents - new and old and just starting out!

This book is great. It contains very specific, detailed instructions on many aspects of parenting foster children, especially teaching social skills, and correcting misbehavior. I actually think it would be useful for any parent, not just foster parents.We do not have any kids, and are just starting to look into foster care, so I cannot attest to the efficacy of their techniques. But the book has gone a long way toward helping me feel more prepared to be a foster parent.

'm just beginning the process of becoming a foster parent and I have learned so much from this book about what to expect and how to approach specific situations. Because it is set up as a resource book more than a narrative nonfiction, the information can seem a little repetitive and over explained if read straight through. But for a newbie like me, stepping into a whole new world, the down-to-earth, step-by-step, comprehensive suggestions are a must have.Note: I got the Kindle version which is fine for me but there are a lot of charts that many people would find easier to use in paper format.

This is a great book - there is so much useful information and practical tips that I had to mark pages to go back to later. It is impossible to digest and use everything after one read but I guarantee this is one book we will be going back to over and over! There are actual strategies for dealing with situations, effective and positive examples of how to communicate with children, and examples of how to handle situations. In my opinion this is a great book for any parent - doesn't have to be just for foster parents!

Not useful for young foster children, better for older perhaps pre-adolescence.

I'm working on getting my foster parent license and have read many books on the subject as I prepare. I found this book to be the best so far. I have never parented before and am interested in an older child so the practical and logical tips and tricks were really helpful. The book provided examples and explicit instructions for the techniques. Some books speak in theory but don't actually detail out exactly what you should do.I am sure once I have my first placement I'll be using this book as a reference guide and will go back to re-read many of the topics as they come up in real life!

This is the most helpful book I have found on Foster parenting. Seems less to do with one person's presonal preferences and about how to help kids. I enjoyed it and could see practical applications.

I enjoyed this book, I found it helpful and well worth buying! I'm sure a few of my other Foster Parent Friends will also find this book useful.
