TExES Core Subjects EC-6 (291) (TExES Teacher Certification Test Prep)

I passed on the 1st time!
I was able to study from this online practice test program and book in addition to my alternative certification program (wasn’t much help). This book was a saving grace! I’m sure this is why I passed on the first try.

Extremely helpful
I bought his book used so I had to pay to get the online experience but after I took the online test it told me exactly which areas I needed to impose upon and I studied those areas and passed all portions of the test on my fort try!!!

Passed exams, so it helped..I think...
Like another review stated, after I left the exam, I felt like I did not do well at all (esp SS). However I passed all subjects first time around, so this book must have helped!I read it front to back, taking notes/highlighting as I went. I held off on taking any tests until the end- not saying I recommend this- but it's just how my brain works. Turns out, the results of the test prep and actual exam were pretty similar. (except SS)Can you tell yet, I am put off by the SS section?? Literally, for me, nothing in this book was helpful for the SS section. I am sure there are variations of the exam, so maybe yours will turn out to be helpful. Probably not the books fault, as the questions on the test were so random and scattered. If I had to tell you what to study for it- everything and anything ever, in every history book will help. The book is good. It certainly helps review that terminology for us returning teachers (taking 11 years off). But there is a lot of completely unimportant and irrelevant information in it (I don't like my time wasted). I could almost tell the different personalities of the writers of each section...some were clear cut and helpful, others were simply put; droning on and on about nothing. They could probably cut the book in half and give you the same amount of information you actually need.On a side note: I have taken New York State and North Carolina teaching exams, which were very much NOT like this one. It is unfortunate that TX does not offer more in the way of manuals, or pertinent, quality test prep. I did hear Tutor 240 is good source, so I went there and actually found a question that was identical to one in this REA book. (And, subsequently, I did NOT see it on the exam- that might have actually been helpful!)All in all, this is a good source to get you started or close out your studies. I wish I could tell you the best route to take to prepare, I don't have one. The fact that you are required to know/recognize literally thousands of possible facts, names, terms, dates, musical notes, battles, court cases, artists, rivers, chemical compounds, might make it impossible to actually "study" for.As I said earlier, I left the test feeling insecure, expecting to retake one or two, but I did pass them all. A couple by the Grace of God..or lucky guessing. (This is why I give it 4 stars- I felt obligated.)I wish you the very best of luck!

Very Helpful
A friend recommended this book to study for 291 but I was skeptical as the test had changed. However, I am so glad I bought this! I passed 4 out of 5 subjects my first attempt, failing SS by only two points and I think that is because I did not study TX history enough in depth and there were a couple random questions I was unsure of. I was mostly worried about Math as that is my worst subject and found the test did not go near in depth as the book but I was able to pass. From the previous reviews, I will agree that the Fine Arts section is random but not as random as I thought it would be. ELAR is my best subject and only read the chapter once and was able to pass with a 258. I read through each subject, taking notes, took the practice tests multiple times, and used flashcards. I did have to buy the practice tests through REA for an additional 14 dollars but it was worth it and helped tremendously. I studied for about 6 weeks for 2-4 hours a day. I will be using REA for ESL and PPR as well. Good luck!

Passed EC-6
I waited until I got my results to write this review, and I passed! This book gives you a pretty good overview of what you need to know to pass the exam. It can be kinda wordy, but it's worth getting through. The practice tests that come with the book were probably the most helpful part of it. I personally thought the practice test questions were harder than what was on the actual test, but I think that's a good thing because it helps you prepare. This book doesn't give you EVERYTHING you need to pass, but it's a good place to start. I paired it with the plentiful amount of quizlets available online. My advice is just to really study those practice tests. Don't be discouraged if you fail them, lol. I don't think I passed a single practice test on the first try. But study the questions you miss, and you'll be in good shape!

Must have! Amazing book!
I waited until I took my test to write this review, and I just recieved my scores and I passed all of the five tests and I owe it all to this book.A little background on me. I recently graduated from college with a minor in education, and have been doing Texas Teachers as my alt certification program. Quite frankly I had no idea what to expect with the TExES as everyones experience varies, but with this book it was overall great!I read this book cover to cover, taking the online tests as I went through each subsection. Now let me just say, the online tests are incredibly beneficial. In the beginning in my worst areas (math and FAHP) I was scoring really badly on the test, but I studied for about an hour to two each day for about two and a half weeks. By this point I had taken all of the online tests for all subjects, so I decided to go back and review the specific competencies I was struggling on for each subject. That's when I started to focus mostly on these, creating quizlet's for the terms I kept missing/confusing and looking over practice questions for those competencies specifically. The last week and a half before my exam I studied basically full time, I didn't go to work for this week and I just did practice exam after practice exam until I saw my scores truly improve and until I basically felt like I actually had it down. However, other resources I also used were quizlet, I also watched a few YT vids (especially for music terms because I have no music ability, at all!) and looked over other free material I found on the internet. But anyways, these are just the things that worked for me and everyone is super different.Honestly, I owe all of my success to this book. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
