Don't buy this edition
The publisher of this edition has removed the end plates of each chapter that showed the artist at work. By placing the plates in a separate section at the end of the book the publisher has also undermined the experience of seeing illustrations in close proximity to the text where they are discussed. This is not The Story of Art as it was intended to be experienced by the author. The 16th edition (1995), although heavy, is the best illustrated.

Useful, but not very robust.
I'm pleased to have this smaller and more portable edition to enjoy and learn from alongside its larger brother, but the binding of my copy was poorly done, and the outer cover came away from the spine almost immediately. Fortunately, working in a library I was able to repair it, but useful though this book is, it isn't terribly robust, and I suspect, in a 'pocket' edition, robustness and durability are the qualities one would look for.
