Q: Is the bowl ceramic or wood?

The bowl and the whisk holder are both ceramic as is the duck. It is a very nice set.

Q: I am new to making matcha tea and there are no instructions with the set. Does anyone know what to do with the strainer?

The matcha powder should be very fine, so the strainer (sifter) is to remove clumps from the powder. More a practical than a ceremonial use.
