Scary HTML isn't anymore!
Got this for my stepson's class at a junior college. I was impressed enough to order my own. I know absolutely nothing about coding or programming, but I easily did the first few pages of the tutorial with him. It is very step-by-step, so should be a good read for the total newbie who needs to learn at a simple level. Each module ramps up a little in intensity; there is less hand-holding and you are expected to apply what you learned earlier. I'm glad his professor chose this book. It takes a scary subject and really makes it simple for us non-techies. Tan boxes distinguish what you actually need to type into your computer; I love that it's color-coded because that's how my mind works. If you are intermediate or advanced level, I doubt this will help much, but it's very user-friendly for beginners.

Use this text to learn HTML5 by tutorials
I like this text. It was carefully designed with lots of beautifully colored diagrams and figures that explain the main points of each chapter. The text avoids making the reader memorize a lot of esoteric terms, but each chapter involves leading the reader through the material via a tutorial that includes most of the points covered in the chapter. Thus, this text book provides a hands-on approach to learning the often complicated subject matter. I highly recommend it.

Really Clear Instructions, Perfect for Do-It-Yourself Learning
I used this book as part of a college class, but honestly, the book is so good, I don't think you even need an instructor, apart from the occasional troubleshooting when you can't figure out where your code has gone wrong. This book uses a lot of partially built websites, and then provides you with the knowledge to update the site and make it even better. The steps to do this are very clear and there pictures for every step, to make it crystal-clear what you're supposed to do.By the end, I had learned how to structure a website, improve existing website styles using CSS, format tables, buttons, etc. It was a lot of fun learning it all, and I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever wanted to build their own website.

Excellent copy of an excellent resource
I'm interested in science journalism and trying to gain an edge when applying to online news jobs by learning some HTML/CSS. After renting and returning this book for a class, I decided to buy it again because it had been so helpful! I especially like the indices and the visual examples of how pages/assignments should look. This particular copy was just under $40 and in better shape than the one I rented- front cover was bent by the mailman, but no markings or torn pages!

Beware Kindle Edition of this Book
Beware this book.I purchased the kindle edition of this book for self-study. I bought it, started reading it, put it down for a year. I picked it up again determined to read and create a website. About 4 weeks ago, this book sent me a DRM message, which I was later to discover was a form of electronic copyright protection. It deleted all books that I had on my kindle--four total. After the books were restored, I noticed that this book did not have any highlights. I was on Chapter 8 of a 10 chapter book. I contacted amazon and we did everything to restore the highlights. In the end, I could not restore my Kindle history. My method of self teaching is to 1) Read & Highlight. 2) Do in chapter tutorials, 3) Do end chapter tutorials, and 4) Go back over my highlights. Obviously, I won't be able to go over my highlights.

Great Book!
Great Book! I have a copy of the physical book, but wanted it for my digital library as well. It definitely walks you through the most important things you need to know about building web pages, and there are plenty of practice exercises to hone in your skills. My favorite part about this book is that it walks you through, but lightly leaves you to use your own skills you've learned. For example, the case projects start off guiding you through, but then the last one leaves you on your own to use the skills you've learned in the tutorial to do your own thing.

Great for beginning HTML & CSS learners
Really covers what you need to know about HTML and CSS.The chapter cases/examples at the end are a little frustrating without guidance but the chapters themselves cover basic to intermediate material quite thoroughly.I would recommend this as a textbook (how I used it) or just a book if you want to learn the latest HTML & CSS with a lot more ease.

Web page.site design
I purchased this book for a class I am taking on web page design. However, this would be a great book for someone interested in learning web design without taking the class. The book walks you through multiple examples of web pages and sites for fictious companies and events. Very interesting and you gain a better than entry level knowledge of web design. No special software needed, Microsoft Windows has everything needed to get started learning. Putting the pages and sites live and on line is a different matter.
