No it is round, about the size of a large wrist watch.

Q: does this unit require a service for operation or is it free to use anywhere?

It's free to use. Allegedly 30,000 courses. It takes about 5 minutes to find your course.

Q: it never connects to gps or courses

Must be defective as my gps always connects

Q: do you have to pay for courses or membership

No. Courses are all downloaded. Periodically you can update it yourself or get your local pro shop to do it if you are going to be playing new courses.
