Idea of the Temple of Painting

It fills my heart with delight to see this book of Gio Paulo Lomazzo appear in English after just over 400 years. The author has taken great care in presenting an old text to a new readership without compromising it's integrity. Figurative painters are certain to find Lomazzo's company endearing and inspiring, in their studio work and on deeper reflection. The translation is a valuable contribution to art history studies in English. I have tried to read parts of the Idea with the aid of translating software in a digitised copy which is available online, with partial success. Learning 16th century Italian proves to be too time consuming.. Now we have a beautiful and accessible translation in English opening up to us the fascinating world of an artist, critic and theorist of the Milanese manerist period.

J'ai terminé seulement il y a quelques jours la lecture de ce livre fascinante. Peintre et théorique de la peinture, Gian Paolo Lomazzo à écrit ici un vrai traité de théorie de la peinture, utile aussi pour les peintres que pour les théoriciens ou historiens de l'art. Avec une abordage large de toutes les questions de la pratique artistique et de la peinture en particulière, Lomazzo nous donne à lre et comprendre la façon de penser la pratique artistique au XV et XVI siècles, ce qui je trouve de grand importance soit pour les artistes, soit pour toutes qui ont pour métier la théorie et/ou l'histoire de l'art.Bref, un livre très important pour tout le monde qui s'intéresse pour les arts, sa pratique, théorie et histoire.
