a masterpiece.
compiles parts #1, #2, and #3 of "slaine, the horned god".i use the word masterpiece and praise a lot of comics here, but that's because i only bother to praise books that are really worth buying, and this is one of them. simon bisely is simply a genius with paint, pencil, ink, and whatever other visual arts medium he may choose to try. he can create photorealism with seeming effortlessness, but instead of photorealism, he constantly exaggerates and twists and heightens anatomy, perspective and foreshortening in order to tell the story in the most entertaining way. he uses real paint here, not computer coloring, which puts this book on the short list of comic books that will stand the test of time these days. the writing here is good and includes a lot of references to actual scottish mythology, which gives the often comical story more weight, even though sometimes it intentionally runs counter to the standards of usual sword and sorcery fundamentals, sometimes almost to the point of satire. but even at its most jokey, it takes itself seriously enough to engross the reader.this very strong binding collects all 3 of the 3 part slaine storyline. other stuff to look for by bisely is the "A B C warriors", which is written by the same author as this and features bisely illustrating in pen and ink.

Modern Myth
While not entirely mythologically intact, the story of both Arthur and the Hound of Ulster live on in this brilliant graphic novel. You can touch the images and are transported into a realm of unbridled sex, violence and utter responsibility. The underlying theme is absolutely not man vs nature, but man's cooperation with nature. More importantly, when that responsibility is followed to the end, and the utter disregard when getting involved with a god. Gorgeous art and terribly terrific writing. A must have.

Nice quality
Overall nice quality, but the original 3 set are the best I've seen so far of this story by Bisley and Mills. There are a few sections that could use some more contrast so they seem sort of washy. I bought this one because Mandarin's versos of Judgement on Gotham was excellently printed. Amazing color and contrast. This one is a little of a let down, but still good enough as a collected volume.

Best Comic Ever
Most beautiful, innovative, original artwork I have ever seen in a comic and I have read a lot of comics. Almost every panel is worth examining closely. This is the only flaw with this edition, it's slightly reduced in size from the original, I would pay more for a bigger print. Otherwise it's nice. Pat Mills is probably one of the smartest and again most innovative writers in comics, maybe even out of comics. This is a highly researched, then creatively interpreted, with a dose philosophy and more than a touch of sex (no drugs) and rock'n'roll spirit. Put simply - buy it you won't regret it.

Fantastic story
What can it be said? Great story, full of Ireland's mythology and masterfully illustrated. A jewel in comic books. Pure art.

Finally!
I read this in the original weekly installments, and had the first two volumes in the large paperback size from waay back in the day. This was a chance to complete the trilogy. The story is great and Bisleys art is fabtastic. I found the colours to be muted and maybe too dark, certainly a little darker than the old oversize paperbacks. I have docked a star for that , otherwisem, a great slice of 80s British comicana

Last Slaine story ever ? Why ???
Why end Slaine here and now ? And why with this rather thin story ? The art is great but Slaine deserved a Simon Bisley art story as good as the horned god or better. That would be a really happy ending for all who have been following Slaine stories for more than 20 years now. Not this.

One of the best comic books of all time.
Bought this (hardback version) a few years back but never reviewed it. Had all the original graphic novels as a kid but over the years and moving house etc they were all lost, such a shame. Therefore, I've been going back and replacing them where possible. When I bought this brand new it was £20 - seeing the prices for new and used versions now tells you how sought after this wonderful story is. If you've never read it, you simply must. Find a version you can afford, preferably in good condition because Bisley's wonderful paintings deserve to be looked at in all their glory. Worth noting that it's being re-released on September 3rd (2020) as a 'collectors edition' - so my advice would be to get that before it sells out and the price goes through the roof. Pat Mills best story for me, just - by a tiny amount - edging out ABC Warriors: The black hole. Buy it - you won't regret it.

All time classic graphic novel
This collection dates from the late 80s where comics were aiming at a more adult market in the wake of things like Dark Knight Returns. It was a good time for 200AD resulting in some classic Judge Dredd story lines and some other character driven epics from writer Pat Mills. Slaine was an established character when THG was written and the storyline, based on Celtic mythology, tells of his epic battle with the Lord Weird, Slough Fegg - a story full of sex, paganism, battle field violence, ancient and capricious gods and tongue in cheek humour. Simon Bisley's art work astonishes more than 20 years on. An exceptional collection.

Fantastic art
The painted artwork throughout the book is just fantastic - if you've read the graphic novel "Batman/Judge Dredd: Judgement on Gotham", then you'll be familiar with the quality, as Simon Bisley painted that, too.The story is good, and makes sure to give new readers enough background information on the characters to understand what is going on with no problems. I was surprised to find that the book is actually quite philosophical, and while it's not exactly mind-blowing stuff, it is definitely more than just a series of beautifully painted fight-scenes.I think it's good value for money and well worth picking up if you like graphic novels.
