TilleyMen's Outdoor Hat

The LTM3 is a great alternative to the LTM6 for those who don't want a large brim...
As any Tilley aficionado knows, the T3 style hat has been a staple in their lineup for many years. I bought my first one (in canvas) back on my honeymoon in 1996 and it was my introduction to Tilley hats. I wore that hat for 12 years and it was literally falling apart by the time I retired it!! Many good hours of enjoyment out of that hat.A few years back, Tilley innovated and came up with an LTM6, which was made of nylon, had the air venting strip on the top, and had a longer brim configuration similar to the T4 though not as long. This hat became a HUGE seller for Tilley. To capitalize on the popularity, Tilley then made the T3 hat in this same vented nylon configuration --- and called it the LTM3. I like the fact they kept the patented T3 "snaps" on the side.... that is what makes the T3 unique.Personally, I have always been a BIG fan of the T3 configuration over all others - besides this LTM3 I currently own three T3 Canvas hats (one well worn one for yard work, one for hiking and one put away new), plus I also own a T3 in the nylon / camo configuration. I also own the LTM6 which I like, but I like this LTM3 better due to the more circular and smaller brim, the side snaps, and how the brim does not get in the way for certain activities. The LTM6 is great for when I go on hikes or activities where there is lots of sun and I want to maximize sun coverage due to the larger brim, which extends more over the back of the neck. But for most other activities I like the LTM3 as the brim "gets out of the way" better and I like having the option of the snap up sides. For example, did you ever sit on a couch or high back chair with an LTM6 (or T4)? Or how about wear a high fitting backpack with the LTM6 or T4? They simply get in the way as the longer brim makes contact and moves the hat. With the T3, this is not as much of a problem.Bottom line is I love all my Tilley hats, but tried to give some plus and minus for the LTM3 vs LTM6 above. If forced to choose one between the two, for me it would be the LTM3 hands down, but again I am a T3 fan. But I still love my LTM6! The snaps on the side of the LTM3 are a bonus for me also.NOTE: I actually returned the hat I bought from Amazon - it arrived in an envelope and crushed to the point of no return. It was probably stored for extended periods crushed as the brim had permanent creases in it - the kind that don't work out over time or with water. I own 15 Tilley hats, and know all the tricks on how to bring them back to new, but it IS possible to ruin one if you leave it stored mashed up for too long. Sometimes I get disappointed at how sellers store / ship these - they are still $85 hats and the way they are handled does not always show the respect a hat of this price should command.I ended up purchasing one from another seller and it was fine... they also shipped it in a box and had it stored correctly.I wholeheartedly recommend this hat. Thanks for reading.

If you've got a big head, this is your savior
I've got a ginormous head. There. I said it. I'm size 8 5/8, which puts me out of the range for most hats. I've been looking for ages for a hat that will fit on my melon. Adjustable baseball caps and the like aren't good. Sure, you can let out the strap so that they fit around a head like mine, but they still looks like a tiny clown hat on someone like me. Then I found this Tilley hat. It's designed to be extra-big and loose fitting for breathability, but for me, that means it doesn't look small on me. The adjustable chin/back strap kept it on my head just fine while airplane prop-wash blew from 20 feet away (volunteering on a flight line) so I'm confident that the strap will work perfectly in anything shy of a hurricane. I'm very pleased with my hat!

Good, but not what I was expecting
I had a Tilley hat for years, and lost it due to an accident. I purchased it from a now-closed hat store, so I went online to buy a replacement.I could not the exact copy of what I had--a somewhat soft canvas hat--and this appeared to be the closest in style. It fits well, and it's useful--but the hat is made of very stiff material, and is not soft and foldable/crumpable at all.I'm not going to return it, because it serves a purpose, but it reminds me whenever I wear it of how much I miss my old Tilley hat. This is a Tilley hat, of course, but it's not the same.

Great hat for Tennis
I've got five Tilley hats and this one I wear for tennis. Because I have to wash it frequently from sweating while playing tennis, I bought a second one. Protects my bald spot and the edges of my ears which always got sunburned when I wore a baseball hat. I've been wearing Tilley hats for thirty years or more and they are the best. I've even worn a couple out and had the company honor their replacement guarantee. I suspect that on these nylon hats they are no longer offering to replace them when they wear out, and maybe on all their other fabric hats, but no matter. The hats always last a long time. You will probably lose one before you wear it out. I have a hat similar to this one with a much wider brim and it is the best hat to wear on hot Texas days when you are working in the sun. Over all, Tilley offers a classic product and they are well worth the money.

Quality Product
You really can't go wrong with a Tilley. My comments aren't really based on my most recent purchase but based on past experience with Tilley hats I've owned including this same model. I have been wearing them for around six or seven years for hiking. Considering I do hundreds of mountains and hikes per year that adds up to a lot of wear. Despite repeated washings they maintain their position, no sagging brims which for me is very important. And the double lace under the chin keeps them grounded even when the the wind is blasting. Since they seem to last forever why did I recently purchase another? I lost my hat - second time.

Sizes not consistent among styles
I ordered this hat and the Wanderer in size 7.25. The Wanderer has a slightly larger circumference despite their supposedly being the same. Also, as another reviewer noted, you might get lucky and you might not when it comes to packaging. Among the hats I ordered to try out, some were folded and squished into a too-small box and a couple were not. The Tilley website will tell you that the hats are not meant to be folded or crumpled for an extended period of time, though a day in a suitcase or backpack is fine.

Does not breathe as suggested and can not remove in public once it is on! Hair is a MESS!
I really liked this hat! However, unless you are a man who does not care how he looks.. you can NOT TAKE THIS HAT OFF ONCE ON!! Especially for a woman, your hair will be hot sweaty, matted down and a literal FRIGHT to see if taken off once on!! Only take off behind a closed room or home door!! Does not really breathe as the open mesh band would suggest it breathes. Returned this after 2 weeks of different attempts at my hair...

Excellent
Bought this for my husband who is thinning on top and chose Tilley on recommendation. He suffers in the summer and previous hats have made his head very hot. Searched around and this was the most competitive price and in the colour he wanted. Followed the head measurement instructions and hat fitted perfectly. Arrived in time, well packed, excellent quality and looks great. He is delighted, protected from the sun and head stays cool.

It's a Tilley. Great Hat
I left my LTM6 in a hotel so this was a replacement. Fits a bit looser for the same size hat than my LTM6 but otherwise is a nice hat. Don't think I will ever use the "Aussie" mode though.
