a great guide book on essay writing, just i found a typo on page 273 line8, I believe it should be "in S11" instead of "S9" because S9 says nothing about Lindley and agree.

This is an excellent book. It teaches all the ins and outs of academic writing. This is one of the most comprehensive books I have come across for writing research papers. Only dissapointment is it uses some weird font type and size which puts so much strain on the eyes and gives you a headache.

The scientific community needs a shared communication language: this essential role of universal scientific language is actually played by English. This often creates problems for non-native authors, concerning both language correctness and communication effectiveness. This book provides appropriate solutions for the problems than can arise, focusing on each of the various textual grain levels, i.e., choice of words, correctness and readability of sentences, succession of sentences in paragraphs, and overall organization of papers. In particular, the book discusses a number of difficulties that stem from the need of simultaneously fulfilling requirements that may seem hard to combine: for instance, simplicity of exposition vs. detailed analysis of complex issues. As a non-native researcher, I have found this book greatly useful because of two basic qualities: completeness and ease of use. As to completeness, a great number, I would even say all of the problems that may face either inexperienced or experienced authors are dealt with clearly, and practical guidelines are given about how to solve them. Ease of use derives from the logical organization of the contents: the initial twelve-page list of contents allows the reader to quickly find where in the book any either general or specific issue is treated.

For 4 years, I have used this book in teaching and working with master’s and PhD students and professors on publishing in English in international scholarly journals, along with several style guides and other materials. This is in a country where this activity is relatively new, the scholarly traditions are very different, and the style of the language makes translation not very successful. The book is both detailed and clear enough for those with at least an intermediate level of English, and it has given many of my students and colleagues the support and confidence needed to organize their content effectively and go ahead and write in English from the earliest stage. They especially appreciate part two on the sections of a paper, to put it mildly. Everything is addressed from the perspective of people who need to write in English who are not native speakers of it, which is unique and invaluable, although I’m quite sure that many of us native speakers could benefit by it too. I’m looking forward to working with the second edition in the coming academic year. My only caveat in regard to the second edition is that the discussion of the publishing process itself is brief, because the focus of the book is on English; people concerned with the whole process and the publishability of the actual content (choice of journal, avoiding predatory sources in research and publishing, international ethical guidelines for authors, getting to peer review, etc.) need to consult additional sources and also to consult style guidelines (APA, Chicago Manual of Style, and others) if required by a journal.
