Easy to read detective novel which was set in a different time
This detective thriller set in a different time shows how far the legal system has changed and how hard it must have been to challenge those with money & status in society

Intriguing story
Overall, this was an entertaining and intriguing read and I enjoyed the comradeship between Daniel and Jason. I thought they were a good team and the story made an excellent first book for the series. However, I don't think the words 'teenager' and 'fan' were coined until the 1950's. Also, in the UK we don't say, "We're sorry for your loss," although it would have been fine for Jason to say it with being an American. Unfortunately, I don't remember who said it.I kept turning the pages and wanted to see how everything worked out. But I did wonder what title Jason had. He was called Lord Redmond, but no mention was made if he was a baron, viscount or earl. Sadly, I often find this a missing element with American authors.I am happy to give four stars and I can recommend Murder in the Crypt for anyone who enjoys historical crime/mystery stories.

Great read
Started this one for something different. Onto my third instalment and I’m loving every twist and turn. Only thing I will say is I did feel as though the endings were predictable.. but going through the story you start to put together all the close the same way Jason and Daniel do.Lover of historical mysteries- what about a Haze and Redmond/ Jem Flockhart crossover???

Evocative Victorian Mystery
This is a well crafted Victorian era mystery, set in a small village called Birch Hill. In a welcome departure, the investigator is not a high flying senior Police Officer, but a lowly Parish Constable. In addition there is no Doctor Watson by his side. This side kick, although a medical man, is an American citizen. The victim, obviously, by virtue of the title, is found in the crypt of the local church. With a lack of suspects and reason for the killing, it presents our two heroes with a real headache but strong will and local knowlege wins through in the end. A worthwhile effort redolent of the 19th Century period.

A thoroughly diverting read
I really enjoyed this murder mystery, which kept me second guessing until the end. The two lead characters are interesting and you feel invested in them and their lives. Well worth a read.

Excellent. A gripping Victorian murder mystery.
What a great storyline, with strong characters and just the right amount of background information about them to add to the intrigue and suspense.A well written , and cleverly crafted thriller that kept me completely engrossed from start to finish. One of the most unforgettable books I have read in a long time and I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book in the series which is due to be released in June.In the meantime I have downloaded two other of this amazing and gifted author 's ghost stories which I am sure will prove to be the ultimate in spine tingling scary enjoyment.I am now an avid fan and follower of Irena Shapiro. She is a skilled and awesome writer, and I wonder why I have never come across her extraordinary talent before.

A Most Enjoyable Read
When Jason Redmond arrives in England to pick up his inheritance, he has no intention of staying in the country. His plan was to return back to America after a few weeks. But when a body is found in the crypt of the church, he teams up with Daniel Haze, the local constable to solve the crime. Daniel, is happy to have help with the case and the two men become firm friends as they set out to find the killer. This is a real page turner. I just couldn't put the book down. Highly recommended.
