The first time you use any of these straws it'll involve a lot of flushing the black powder out of the filtration system. We're talking about sucking (and discarding) a good few pints of water through it (whilst hopefully not getting too much in your mouth) before the water turns clear and the straw is ready to use.Once that annoyance is over, the water tastes absolutely crystal clear, like bottled mineral water. It's a very useful tool to have because it's so easy to carry on your person, and it lasts for such a long time. Sucking the water through the filter takes more effort than you might think, but it's not too bad once you get used to it, it just slows down your natural drinking speed.The only real downside is that it's quite tricky to clean the inside of a straw!
