I don't know what kind of wood is in this thing but it feels firm and it's pretty heavy. You'll still have to bury it in order to be able to push off though. The rubber covering seems thick enough to survive for at least a little while, although if you're using metal cleats it will probably get torn up. Again, you can't throw this down on the surface and expect it to sit there when you stand on it and push off. It will tip over. Your other option is probably a flat rubber with stakes, which will not give you the same lip as a real pitching rubber and therefore will not help you with your push off. Provided you can put it in the ground, this style is better.The front step is not thick but if you're doing it right you're not standing on that part anyway. The wood core is exposed on the bottom, so if there's a problem with rotting that would probably be why. If you're worried about it you could probably stain it or seal it or whatever. Still better than just getting a 4 by 4 and sticking it in the ground. I'm saying five stars because I haven't had a problem with it. Just need to let it sit out there and see how it holds up.

falls apart
the bottom of rubber is cheep wood that falls apart in less than 1 season. indoor use would be fine
