Unexpected and unprecedented insights galore!
This book is a fount of well-founded insights backed up by sound philosophical reasoning and historical precedents. In particular, it offers a truly ground-breaking view of emergence based on classical Indian philosophy whose pertinence to modern issues is quite unexpected. Ganeri even brings in certain classical Western thinkers, such as Galen, in his laying-out of a cogent account of emergence. It would be a serious elision if a modern, philosophically inclined thinker were to pass up such an all around example of fine scholarship and conceptualization.

It seems to be a history of Indian thought about the self rather than offering a clear description of the self. The author shows how expert he is in the area without thinking of the reader.
